Like others, I have had really good luck with Kel-Tecs. I’ve had my P-11 since the mid-nineties (28 years!) and it still fulfills its role as a lightweight 9mm. I only use standard pressure ammunition in it and it required a little fitting when new, but it is still a relevant self defense option. My P32 and P3AT have also been excellent as pocket backups. They are all very reliable and viable options in their respective roles.

USP Compact police trade in that I bought back in the mid 2000s as a broke college student for $325. 1 mag, no box and a bunch of holster wear but I never had any issues with it.

It was my one and only handgun for years before I had any disposable income and got more into shooting.

S&W Shield checks all the boxes and can be found cheap.
Funny thing is cheap guns that work usually becomes a more expensive gun. When I bought my 9 and 40, with rebates, they were a lot less expensive than they are now even with the new rebates. Same with my Sig 238HD. It's at least $200 more than when I purchased it.

Taurus 856 UL. Purchased just to see if the Brazilian Bull was as shoddy as the “experts” say. This thing runs like a champ, for right at 300 bucks. So good, in fact, I bought another, 3” stainless. It also has been fantastic. I still love my S&W K frames, but I’m fine with the hate I get for my Taurus .38s.

I don't understand why people get so bent out of shape when others express their experiences as different that their own...

I haven't seen one person here claim to be an "expert" in Taurus firearms. What I have seen is people like myself who have had miserable experiences with Taurus firearms and, consequently, don't recommend or buy them based upon those experiences. In fact, I have to wonder if your experiment had turned out badly and your new purchase had been a pile of dog excrement, if you yourself wouldn't be of a different opinion? Either way, sharing experiences - good or bad - is not claiming to be an expert.

I like cheap handguns that work. By working I mean guns that are dependable and accurate enough to be used for self defense. They might not
be fancy or have a good resale value but that doesn't really bother to me. I had rather have a gun that works and 500 rounds of ammo than a fancy gun and 50 rounds.
My cheap guns would be,
My KelTec P3AT, been carrying it for years.
My Canik TP9sa, bought it when most people said they were junk.
My Rossi 38 snub nose. Bought a used one but the guy begged for it back so I got a new one about 20 years ago. I liked the old one better though.
When Ruger came out with the SR series I bought a used P97 cheap and it makes shooting 45acp fun. Big and chunky but soaks up the recoil.
Anyone else have any elcheapo guns that works for them?
As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, my $489 Tisas. Photo is from today’s range session. It definitely checks the accuracy box.
