Taurus repair experience

Up to 2 years ago, i never owned a taurus. all the bad rap about them kept me away. when they came out with the TX22 i decided to get one. to my surprise, it has been a very good gun. very reliable & a decent shooter.
so i decided to get a taurus G3. i had to order it from rural king. so i had to pay with credit card. i picked it up on a friday & shot it saturday. after putting a few rounds through it accuracy started getting erratic . front sight came loose on it. its just like glocks, screwed on. so i took it home to fix it. no locktite was ever put on the screw, thats why it came loose. after taking front sight off, i am looking over the slide & noticed a small crack in it. i would call it a casting flaw rather than a crack. very small. went from safety plunger to breach face. extractor there also.
monday morning i called taurus. to my surprise, i got right through. by 9am i had a shipping label & off it went to taurus in Georgia. nice lady on phone told me 4 weeks. received by them May 12. after 5 weeks i called them & asked to speak to a supervisor . was told one would call me back within 24 to 48 hours. one called me back 2 days later.
i figured they would either replace the gun or the slide when i sent it in. supervisor told me they were replacing the slide. slide has to come from Brazil. so now its been a little over 5 weeks now. i asked her how much longer am i going to have to wait. she had NO idea. so i said to her, it could be tomorrow or 3 months from now. no answer from her.
what pisses me off the most is, i had to pay the credit card bill & have no idea when i will ever get the gun that is now paid for. they refused to refund my money also. i told them i was tired of waiting. sorry was the response.
so this is my experience with taurus service. one thing for certain, i will never buy or own another taurus. i hope to see it back by the end of summer.

billy b , your post has made my decision on Taurus. I too have a Rural king in my area and they have the G3C for cheaper than other places. I have been on the fence about getting one but just was unsure. The other day i decided to visit a Taurus forum and they have a whole section for Taurus related problems. To me that was CRAZY. It's pretty bad if a gun forum has a whole section for problems and failures. Also I read all kinds of issues on the older ones and newer ones. I was just looking at the G3C to get as a "cheap trunk gun" for emergencies or such. I have a few older but reliable Glock 17's . So I decided to just use one of these. You don't live forever and having a safe queen isnt practical for me anymore. I know that my older Gen 2 Glock 17's will not rust and it will run and run all day long. I give all brands a chance and such but there are too many problems going on with Taurus to take a chance and waste $300 . Slides cracking , sights falling off , certain ammunition not chambering correctly , trigger mechanisms not resetting , dead triggers , pins walking out , magazines not seating correctly , magazine releases popping out of the frame , striker/firing pins breaking , springs breaking , good Lord !!!! money is too hard to come by these days to waste it on an unsure thing with crappy customer service.

PattonWasRight had a nice, lengthy tale regarding his work with Taurus and Customer Support. Lots of issues, but in the end, they did make things right, and he was patient and persistent.

In Taurus defense, lots of things being imported are totally unpredictable. My company is awaiting millions of items that got snagged in the Suez canal debacle that are still in transit, and we have multiple ships that the longshoremen can't even get to to unload due to labor shortages and all sorts of unforeseen complications. It is a mess out there. I have neices that work for Honda and Toyota in parts sourcing, and if you want to hear some of the most streamlined and organized parts supply chain folks tell tales of woe, it is bad out there! Parts tuned to arrive onsite measured in +/- seconds and minutes are off by unpredictable months. It is a very strange time!

See Patton's thread. Long, long saga, that took forever to unfold!

Taurus' problems stretches back for years and are not related to any current events. There are numerous examples of repeat returns and waiting months before you finally get something back from Taurus. The sheer volume of problem threads floating around on gun forums tells one all they need to know. The one Taurus that I still have will fire with the safety catch on, and I only still have it because I don't feel comfortable selling it to anyone.

I've previously posted this on another thread about a year or so ago (before this covid mess started):

Why buy a Taurus? Is it because that is all you can afford? Taurus quality has been terrible for years. I have said it many times - if someone GAVE me a Taurus, I would not want it...

Why risk it? No, 100% of the guns they make don't break - but they seem to have WAY higher of a percentage of problems, compared to other brands. IF money IS an issue.... When you can buy an M&P Shield for $250 or less, WHY buy a Taurus? Don't like the Shield? There are still other, higher quality firearms in the $300 range. Hell, the Beretta APX is around the $300 mark if you look hard enough online.

If you REALLY WANT to buy a Taurus, and you know what you are doing - I GUESS, go ahead.... Knock yourself out.

But, too many gun newbies fall for Taurus products... They walk in the door and see the price of the Taurus guns compared to everything else. Then, the know nothing sales person (usually at a big box chain store, because a good % of real gun stores will not even carry the brand) will tell the newbie how good the gun is.

Then, after the 1st range trip, they post at a gun forum, asking for help. And by the time they pay for shipping (in the past, Taurus refused to cover shipping - not sure about 2020), the gun was no longer cheap (it's over $50 to ship a gun back to the manufacturer).... Then, be prepared to wait forever to get the gun back...

And, how many times have I see posts on various forums of guns being returned by Taurus with NOTHING done to them?

Even the various CEOs can't change things, no matter what they promised...

People point to the newest 2020 CEO as "turning the company around." But, look at Taurus history:

Back in 2010 - Someone quotes an article about how the new CEO of Taurus (Mark Kressler) will help improve quality... : Taurus Quality: Objective Opinions...? - The Firing Line Forums

I then did an internet search of the CEO prior to Kressler. His name was Bob Morrison, and he was CEO in the earlier 2000s. I couldn't find even ONE article where he said he would improve quality... Go figure... :D

In 2012, the Taurus CEO, Mark Kressler, promises "new products, better customer relations and higher quality": Taurus: No More Bull - The Truth About Guns

But then in 2014, that CEO (Mark Kresser,) was fired... He was a CEO who had "led the charge at Taurus to tighten quality control."

https://www.guns.com/news/2014/07/3...ly-fired-its-former-after-company-acquisition

And, his replacement CEO plans to repair the Taurus reputation in 2014 (Anthony Acitelli): Interview With Taurus USA CEO Anthony Acitelli | Shooting Sports Retailer

In 2015, that same CEO (Anthony Acitelli) said: "the agreement is a step to rebuild the brand’s credibility". He was referring to a class action lawsuit about defective guns...

Furthermore: Acitelli said: "A company that stands behind its product and is willing to do the right thing for the customer actually gives us credibility."

Taurus ready to rebuild credibility, but hurdles still ahead - Morris, Haynes, Wheeles, Knowles, & Hornsby

Acitelli eventually left, and in 2017, the new CEO (David Blenker) said: “We have a very dedicated work force that is committed to making Taurus the top brand and I’m excited to be leading the team with this vision.

Taurus USA Promotes David Blenker to CEO

But, in Jan 2020, David Blecker leaves, and he is replaced by Bret Vorhees. Here, Vorhees, the new Taurus CEO, vows to improve quality in April 2020:

Yea, it's gonna happen.... After all these years, Taurus is "better."

I owned a Taurus 7 round, 357 mag snub nose revolver several years ago. I bought it used. I don't remember the model number. I shot several boxes of 38 spl and about two boxes worth of full house 357 mag ammo through it. It had not been shot much before I owned it, and I was firing it when the barrel launched itself down range into my target stand. I sent it off to get fixed, and promptly sold it upon its return for more than I paid for it. Needless to say, I only buy quality firearms now.

I picked up a PT 24/7 back in 2006 or so when they were getting a lot of hype. The trigger was just god awful. One of the spongiest and stiffest triggers I have ever felt. To the point getting any real accuracy out of it was just not feasible. I put less than 100 rounds through it before I buried in my safe and that's where it sat for over 10 years until I heard it was recalled, and at that time it was already conveniently past the recall time frame so I was hung with it. The gun will fire with the safety on, and will even fire if you chamber a round and then hit the back of the slide. Thankfully, I never carried it.

The current G2 and G3 series Taurus pistols exhibit the same problems with the safety, as does the TX22 and probably every other semi-auto striker released by Taurus in the past few years. Makes me wonder when those will start being recalled. Taurus spends millions of dollars in suits, sweeps the problems under the rug, then reinvents a new pistol and releases it with the same problems years later.

But they're trying to rebuild their credibility.

A friend of mine just sent his 941 revolver in because it quit firing . He probably didn’t have 200 rds. through it . It is a discontinued model with a 5” barrel . They contacted him and said that it couldn’t be repaired and sent him a new 942 . It has a 3” barrel . I guess their customer service was good but wouldn’t have been happy with the shorter barrel and it doesn’t speak well of their products if it broke beyond repair as little and pampered as that revolver was .

Hopefully, it'll go better than this.

I am enjoying my TX22, but I also remember owning a PT Slim in 9mm years ago. It was designed to malfunction rather than shooting, never had so many FTF, FTE’s in all of my life than with that particular gun (rimfire excluded in fairness).

Sent it for repair, got it back and… surprise! It was just a malfunctioning POS after repairs were -allegedly- performed than when I had sent it in. That experience kept me away from even looking at Taurus guns until the TX which so far has been working really well. I dread the day when I have to send it in for service though, I really do.

Would still not consider the brand tall for carrying and self defense, promises to improve are cheap to make and hard to keep, ane the lack of customer service described by OP is not acceptable. Glocks are a tad more expensive but CS is top notch.

I must be the only person that owns 8 Taurus guns and never had to send one back. 5 of mine were bought prior to 1990 and the latest ones after 2019. The only problem was a bad magazine for one of my TX'22's and they replaced that in 9 day's. Just lucky, I guess. Truth is I've never sent a Glock back, (2) or a Colt back (5), or a CZ back (6). I had a BAR that wouldn't group tighter than 7 inches and Browning replaced the barrel on that. So other than Rohm .22's and a Universal Carbine that was plain junk, I have been very lucky.

You're not the only one. I've owned 20+ Taurus revolvers & pistols over the last 30 years with one minor issue with a M66 .357magnum that I easily corrected myself. So while I feel for the OP's issue, it isn't the experience of everyone. I've been enjoying my G3 and TX22 :)

No they just just box it back up and ship it back to you as-is. That's why you have to keep sending a Taurus back again (and again).

I think their strategy is to make you tire of sending it in and keep the worthless pile of springs and by the time you get through cussing them out, you aren't able to form sentences well enough to be able to tell anyone about your horrible experience with a Taurus.

I purchased a Taurus “Judge” in 2006.
Fifteen years later that firearm is perfect, and has never given me one issue.
I shot it once in 2007 and each of 10 rounds through it was flawless. There was no breakage or obvious deterioration despite the pounding from the 5 rounds of 410 and 5 of 45LC. Impressive!
It would be tough, but if any of you want it I would reluctantly sell it to you. I hear they are the one gun that can do everything.
I am sure one of you here needs this collector piece.
