Although Glocks have been my main pistols for about 15 years, for now I have 3 Glock 17s, I would like to buy one metal DA/SA pistol for nostalgia, recreational shooting and as a potential backup for home defense. Since I have experience with Beretta 92 and CZ-75 pistols, and that is what is available in my country, I am torn between the CZ-SP01 Shadow, which fits perfectly in my hand, and the different variants of the Beretta, 92FS, 92FS Inox and 92A1. The thing that turns me off the most about CZ is that the factory in the Czech Republic no longer produces this model. I don't mind a lot that the gun doesn't have a firing pin safety. I like its ergonomics, as well as the fact that it has a steel frame. One of our gunsmiths here talks me out of the Beretta and claims that the CZ-75 is a more durable pistol as he has personally seen several broken slides on Beretta 92's, including his personal pistol. Again, my main criteria are durability and reliability. What would you choose and why? Thanks to everyone for participating in the discussion.

I’d take the CZ and it’s not even close for me. I’ve owned several CZs and a Berretta and I prefer the ergonomics of the CZ and it’s recoil impulse compared to the Beretta. They’re both reliable guns, but I find the CZ more fun to shoot and I can shoot it faster and more accurately than a Beretta. Both guns are easy to upgrade with a few parts and a trigger job, which can be a worthwhile investment.
I recently bought a CZ75BD. Its accuracy is impressive, especially for a carry gun or a service type pistol. It has an almost uncanny ability to reach out way past "normal" pistol ranges and connect. I've never fired a Beretta 92.
I have 3 of each and I'd choose the Beretta, The reason is that the Beretta feeds ammunition into it's chamber directly straight WITHOUT having to run up a ramp and into the chamber. Also the parts for a Beretta are all over the place and very easy to replace.
If you're in the EU there are a number of tuned CZs on the market, several with 6" barrels, set up for target shooting. Most are based on the SP01. I have one called the Taipan which has a single action only trigger. You can see several on the website of Frankonia. The most recent issue of Caliber Magazine, 07-08 2024 has a whole section reviewing several of these too but it's in German. The CZ pistols are excellent, mine is 100% reliable and very accurate. I also like the Beretta but if you want one of those, try and find the one put out by Wilson Combat a while back.
The bad thing about the CZ is that CZ has gotten to where they price their crap high as heck ! Beretta does too but the 92 can be bought a lot cheaper than the CZ. Again , the Beretta will eat almost any 9mm ammo where the CZ will be more picky.
I have both, I prefer the CZ. CZ has better ergonomics for me, fits my hand better, and the recoil is smoother.
