STEP ONE: Removing the Black coating...
This step was performed using a flat surface in this case a 12" x 12" sheet of mirror... Using 600 grit sand paper and getting the coating off....

NOTE: ALL SANDING IS TO BE DONE WITH THE SAND PAPER TAPED TO THE FLAT SURFACE (Glass preferably) AND THE SLIDE PUSHED AND PULLED ACROSS THE SANDPAPER, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU WANT A 100% SMOOTH AND WAVE FREE FINISHED LOOK.

STEP TWO: Wet Sanding...
I started out using 1000 grit sand paper sanding in one direction... Then went to 1500 grit going in the opposite direction smoothing the scratches off from the previous step... Next up was 2000 grit going in the same direction as the 1000 grit step to smooth out the scratches.... Next up is 2500 grit going in the same direction as the 1500 grit step to smooth things out competely...
[This pic is right after the 1000 grit step I didnt take any after the 1500, 2000, and 2500 steps.]

STEP THREE: Polishing
For this step you'll need Some Mothers Aluminum polish, Flitz, or any other kind of metal polish you desire. You'll also need some micro fiber terry cloths. Just dip your rag in get some polish on the rag and rub, rub, rub ,rub, and rub till desired mirror like finish.

Looks Awesome!

Not for me,doooode. But just letting you know, you can't carry that while at work. Best Buy won't allow it.

Suggest you sell it to the homies in Oakland,Calif. Next time use a Hi-Point for these "experiments".

Bowtie, or any others that may have this experience can chime in also...

Will toilet bowl cleaner effectively remove the nitrate finish?

The idea being that very little polishing would be needed to achieve a dull grey/charcoal finish. Or perhaps, its just best to start with a mild compound and some elbow grease? I was hoping for a more even effect (ie. dipping)

I have no idea regarding the toilet bowl cleaner but I can tell you glock slides are far from flat. If you pollish without getting it flat first then it will be wavey as hell. If you dont want a mirror shine then you'll never see the waves. If you want a satin look then I would go through the steps with Wet/Dry sand paper starting with about a 600 and work your way down to 1000 or 1500 and skip the pollishing at the end. You'll end up with a smooth satin look. Hope this answered your question..

I used an electric sander because i see no other way to get the "orange peel" look out of the middle of the slide. My sander has foam underneath the sandpaper to reach into the middle of the gun to get it satin smooth. I started at 400 then after a long while went to 320 then on up the line to 1000 before polishing.
