Ultralight 10/22 build...........

So I have commenced the build of the most expensive 10/22 in history. (not really)

It will primarily be used for speed steel competition and or steel challenge.

Goal weight is going to be around 3.7 pounds with the optic on it unloaded.

I've been gathering parts for the last couple months and hope to have it done around the Christmas Holidays.

Specs so far.

Factory Ruger 10/22 Charger Receiver.
JWH Custom scalloped bolt.
JWH Custom round charging handle and recoil spring assy.
PMACA Multi Chassis.
Smoke Composites carbon fiber rifle length stock.
Venom Defense carbon fiber grip.

Other parts are slowly trickling in.

Enjoy so far. Any questions or comments, fire away.

Nice. What optic you plan on going with ?
I have a used Trijicon RMR RM01 that wouldn't survive on my G17L and has been back for warranty twice and I just got it back again. So I figured what the heck, I'll see how it does on the 10/22. The riser I want to use for it could get kinda spendy but it's worth a try to me.

That's interesting stock. As much NSSF as I've shot I've never seen one. No idea what my rifles weigh but I'd guess under 4 pounds with Axiom stocks. They're ugly but light.
If you are talking about the PMACA chassis? yeah, I've never seen one in person before or even on the net. When I started searching out parts for this project they were coming up a lot in picture searches and I couldn't really find anything bad about them. So I went for it. They seem to be a very stand up company to deal with.

The sad part is I could easily sink a thousand bucks into this thing and my son will likely still kick my ass with his near stock 10/22 with a cheapo Tapco stock and a Bushnell TRS-25 lol. I enjoy building things though. It's in my nature.

Plan is to go with Volquartsen VCULB-28 barrel. Ultralight carbon fiber. It's listed as 15oz.

16.5" long with 1/2x28 threaded muzzle.

I wouldn't mess with anything that would require SBR paperwork.

the red dot is fast you can swing at targets with practice .
Yup, that's all I'm going for right now. Only used for steel competitions. Some of our stages can have a 25 foot width of swing on 5 plates and often changing directions multiple times.

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect this thing to turn me into a world champion or anything. I really do just like to build stuff for fun.

Moving along slowly but steady.

Got the Carbon Fiber handguard from PMACA last week. Also loctited in the UTG PRO rail which brings it up to the height of the handgaurd. Looks nice and feels great.

All parts to finish this thing are officially ordered.

Volquartsen black anodized aluminum full trigger assembly will be here tomorrow. Scored that for 192 shipped.

Got the Carbon Volquartsen barrel coming from Optics Planet for a nice 216 shipped.

UTG .9" ultralight riser for the RMR is also coming from Optics Planet.

I purchased the Carbon Fiber Volquartsen Barrel from Optics Planet over the Black Friday weekend, scored it for $193 shipped. I am gonna replace my Kidd barrel in order to drop some weight.

I built my light weight 1022 steel challenge gun as follows:

Blackhawk Lightweight stock, and I trimmed 1.5 oz from the factory 14oz.

16in Ruger Youth barrel

Standard Ruger receiver

Polish/trimmed bolt (took the corners and rounded the bottom, works great)

Standard Ruger mounting plate, trimmed in half. Only two screws, but red loc-tight. After 5K, never came loose.

1.5oz holo sight.

Whole gun weights about 3.5lbs.

Very accurate with CCi Standard.

The Volquartsen trigger assy showed up in the mail yesterday. Beautiful piece and I love the trigger shoe itself. Looking forward to firing it soon.

I'm also happy with the way the gap is between the trigger guard and the grip. Not nearly as unsightly as I thought it could be.

I ordered the barrel like a dumbass the day before black friday so I missed out on the extra 11% off. I don't really care though.

Always be cautious when ordering from Optics Planet. It could be a month of Sundays before you get your order. I'm prepared to cancel this order if it even remotely goes a day past their predicted ship date.

I don't care how long it takes to ship. I have never had problems ordering from them in the past. Since I got such a significant discount on the barrel, I am prepared to wait several months.

I'm good till the 1st week of January and then it's buy elsewhere for me. Got **** to do and people to see. Hopefully it will work out though as it really is a good deal. That being said, I've had to cancel two orders with them before where they didn't have stock they said they had. At least going into this order, I knew they didn't have the stuff in stock.

Got the Trijicon RMR installed. The 20 dollar UTG mount is an exceptionally well built piece for the dollar and it's not heavy.

The combination of parts shoulders for me perfectly. DOT on target 100% naturally.

Excellent build, love it!! This is possibly the highest quality and lightest 10/22 build ever. Very nice work. Why did you mount the red dot so high (there are no iron sights I presume)? You want to mount the optic as low as possible.

You should weigh it, i bet it is between 3-4 pounds total.

Where is the barrel? I don't see it in any of the pictures.

Thanks bigdude.

1.... couple reasons it's mounted where it's at. It may seem like it's really high but it's not. It's mounted where you would have good cheek weld and head alignment on a co witnessed AR-15. Any lower than that and your head would be awkwardly scrunched onto the stock. Like shooting a Sub 2000 if you have one of those. I know that height over bore has affects on shooting a different distances but in my case this gun will be shot at an established distance for shooting steel so once it's sighted in for that distance I'm good to go.

Lastly on that topic. I hate shooting steel matches with ear plugs in on rifles unless I have to. Any lower of a mount and the stock will hike up even low profile ear muffs exposing the ear to damage. Even mounted where it's at now I may have problems with ear muffs. Will find out soon enough.

2.... It is currently 3.1 pounds or so without the barrel or the magazine. Honestly if I would have went with a PMACA ultralight stock and no hand guard it would have been a solid half pound lighter but I'll admit, I really wanted the carbon fiber hand guard for both aesthetics and comfort. In theory it should be right at 4 pounds with the barrel unloaded when it's done. So unfortunately not the lightest. But still REALLY light.

3.... The Volquartsen Carbon Fiber barrel will be here on Wednesday of next week. Finally. Kind of regret going the Optics Planet route, but hey, the price was great.

More posts to come.
