Taurus GX4 vs SA Hellcat vs Ruger micro 9 ... verdict?

I've had some misadventures with the Sig P365 (sold both of mine) and have re-dedicated myself to the G26.5 platform and currently own two of them. However, I still get an occasional itch to explore the micro-9 world.

Two of my shooting buddies that I highly respect have had great results with the GX4 and sing its praises for a great stock trigger and reliability. They are certainly offered at an attractive price point, including a $50 rebate, but I'm reluctant to experiment with a gun that would require a new holster (or two) and add to my 'old-age' confusion with magazines, etc.

At the same time, I've read some good reviews of the Hellcat and have heard nothing about the Ruger offering.

Any experience with these guns would be greatly appreciated.

What didn't you like about the 365?

I have a few of the smallest 9s made, and just wasn't carrying as often as I intended, so after thinking 9mm did everything well enough for all of my adult life (powerful enough, fit in guns small enough) I just got my first .380, the LCP Max.

I posted the other day about the P365 X Macro, but reasons similar to yours regarding the 365 line, I kinda just stopped that idea. I don't like the idea of parts being so pricy for P365s, mags, etc.

The GX4, well, I had very mixed results and I would not purchase another. Now, there's a serious safety issue that Taurus is openly acknowledging and and getting ready to deal with. No, thank you.

I had been also eyeballing a Glock 48 MOS in the last couple months. I owned a regular 48 in the past, and wasn't blown away by it, and the capacity to size ratio (No, I would not use Shield Arms mags) made that a nevermind.

The gun that has been catching my attention, along with these others I've been browsing, is the Hellcat Pro. I have several locally available for $600-625, and it's their Gear Up package which comes with 5 magazines. The sights and mags, that's a decent deal.

That's awesome. $600 and I personally love the sights, and the trigger I tried on it today was not nearly as mushy or bad as I thought. I actually thought the creep was pretty linear and predictable, so the trigger isn't an issue to me.

I hesitated and didn't buy it. I'm regretting that this evening. I think it's what the XMacro should have been, or at least a 15 round XMacro grip module option; a slightly NOT so long in the grip for 17 rounds in a small CCW gun.

I'd never shot or really cared to shoot a Hellcat, until the Pro came out. Since then, I've been quietly watching its existence and progress. I've never owned a Springfield Product, but my buddy's XD40 is an excellent shooter. He broke it in with 5-6K over a couple years, and last time out, it was like shooting a 9mm and the trigger was just excellent. I have no issues with Croatian made weapons. They seem to know how to make good guns. :)

ETA: As excellent as his XD40 was the last time I got to shoot it, it is a dog ugly gun :D

My Hellcat has been 100% as a carry gun, small, light, and high capacity. Added a Holosun 407K red dot and loved it. Picked up extra mags including the 15 rounder. I then purchased a Glock 26.5 and it was a great shooter. Wow! The G26 was really good. Then purchased a G26.3 and it was really good. My 26's with irons were better/faster than the Hellcat with the red dot. The 26 is a better shooter!

I have shot and owned all three of the pistol the OP is asking about. The GX4 just seemed not quite ready for prime time. It’s way better than Taurus’ previous offerings, but that’s not saying much. It was shootable, but something just gave me a feeling I was waiting for it to break. The MAX-9 is the most accurate of all the micro’s I have shot. It never felt good in my hands and always felt like it was about to jump out of my hands. The Hellcat would be what I would carry, if limited to the three choices, but would be the Pro version. It seems the best built of the three and was accurate enough for me. Sure it would be more accurate if I gave it more range time.

Like the OP, I gave up on the Sig 365 and basically Sig in general. I have reaffirmed my commitment to Glock and carry a G26, G43, or G42. I do have a G28 which I think is pretty cool and will probably carry it as soon as my sights, extra mags, and more ammo arrives.

Your thoughts, minus the Ruger Max 9 as I've not touched that one either, are virtually the same as mine. Glock 43 is my small Glock carry of choice. The 26 is an excellent shooter, but I found that the 19 distributes that thiccc chunky OG Glock frame better on my back where I carry. Still, the 26 does call to me from time to time... Still.....

Aside of the 43 with a 3.4" barrel, I want all my guns to have a minimum 3.5" or better barrel length. The Hellcat Pro does that in spades.

The only Ruger that I would consider would have to come in a "Pro" version without the added thumb safety and the accursed magazine safety. I've shot the Hellcat and I like the trigger better than the SIG p365 because to me, the trigger on the Sig is too light for safety's sake.

I also don't want magazine extentions on a micro size gun and prefer flush tit mags for maximum concealability, Yes, a longr grip is easier to shoot, but that just means that you need to spend more time at the range learning to shoot your carry gun to the best of your ability.

Of all the micros the shield plus shoots the softest. If you’re looking for something less snappy the shield is for sure it. My hellcat is the snappiest by a large margin but it doesn’t bother me. It’s been 100% reliable and eats everything I feed it just like the shield. Stay away from the Ruger unless you want to sound like you’re carrying a half empty box of tic tacs. Those things rattle like crazy and feel so cheaply made. The shield is my pick in the micro world. That or a 43/43x. Whichever scratches your itch. You already enjoy the 26 so why not just stick with what works for you with Glock.

I bought the GX4 WANTING it to be what everyone claims it is.

Simply put the trigger is awful. No reset feel, impossibly hard wall, long reset.

The mag release is a known problem by Taurus with a trip back twice and they bought it back from me. Mags can be dropped just by being in your pocket.

I've found even more P365s that I just have to have.

If you go Max, see first if you can get the trigger to lock itself up by pushing sideways just a bit when pulling back...Not the dingus, but the actual trigger.

This is like a multiple choice test where one of the answers can be easily and quickly eliminated.

Goodbye Taurus.

Two answers seem correct and a toss up. Both SA and Ruger have recalls on other guns in their past. Both of the current choices appear solid.

But one answer, the G26, stands out as being the most correct. This is due to its proven reliability, track record, and the fact that the OP already owns two of them.

The G26 is the answer.

I had a hellcat, it was very reliable but in my experience not enjoyable to shoot. If you watch all of the big YouTube reviewers, every single one says it's the snappiest of the micro 9s. I thought they were all being overly critical until I shot it and they were correct. I would hands down carry my 26.4 over that.

I have no experience with the others but will say the Shield Plus is my pick for the top slim double stack nine out there.

I went with the 43X but that said id also use the Hellcat(or 365) either or really. but since I have the 43X I dont "need either" my kid has the Hellcat and I have a LOT of time behind the trigger of it and I like that as much as the Glock 43X with the extended mags.

So I have my 9mm daily CC covered.. what I need now is the Ruger.... but not the Ruger you mentioned OP I need the LCP Max for pocket carry to be covered better than it is now since I havent found a 9mm pocket carry gun the size of the LCP Max yet.

CBennett - I had an LCP Max and shot it pretty well, but the rattling slide just bugged me. I guess that's a fairly common phenomenon. I also felt like the original LCPs were just a bit more discreet for pocket carry and I was willing to sacrifice the extra capacity for that.
