I've got some extra cash burning a hole in my pocket and began thinking about a Glock field knife for my admittedly sketchy bug-out bag. My threat assessment is virtually zero, so I don't see myself engaging in a knife fight. Hell, whatever I learned in the military 50+ years ago is a faded memory, so I'm not ever certain what good it would be to have a large fixed-blade knife nearby.

My 'bug-out bag' is an old Land's End attache case, currently equipped with a flashlight, a couple hi-cap mags for my G26.5 and a very deficient first aid kit (which needs upgrading).

I can't see myself facing a zombie apocalypse and foraging for food by hunting rabbits and squirrels at the age of (soon to be) 71 years of age. For some reason, I just feel an itch for a Glock knife. Actually, the bug-out bag is more for securing the spare mags and holsters for the Glock and my pair of j-frames when I get the oil changed or other maintenance done on my vehicle ... throw all incriminating stuff into the bag and sit in the waiting room reading a good book while the work is being done.

If I were to move ahead, does the root saw make any sense? Would I be better off simply moving my Victorinox locking pocket knife into the bag? I've dressed out deer from beginning to end with that knife, so it's proven its practicality in my recent past.

Talk me down. Please.
Go buy one. They are $35.00 new in package in my area gunshows. I prefer the Glock 78 as I don't need a root saw. I have many fixed blade knives that will probably never get used but I collect knives for fun. If you want a more versatile fixed blade knife only slightly more expensive than the Glock 81 , a Cold Steel SRK in SK-5 steel, $43.00 on Amazon is a great choice. I prefer it to the Glock knives. As another poster stated the Gerber Strongarm with fine edge makes a very handy knife at around $54.00 from Cabela's when I bought mine. Morakniv Basic 511 is available on Amazon for $8.49. So if you really aren't going to use this knife buy the Glock 81 and enjoy it. tom. (y)

I like the Glock knife, but I prefer the model 78. It seems, that the 81's sawback makes the blade weaker. It's like a kind of breaking point.

When I was drafted to the West-German Bundeswehr in the late 80s, almost everyone bought the Glock FM78 because at this time, the german field knife was a pile of scrap.
The officers tolerated the 78, but not the 81 with it's saw.

This knife offered all, what a soldier needed and it was cheap. No big deal when it was worn out.

DON'T ASK ME WHY, i saw it at shot show. So Dave found me one and shipped it to me. i figure its good if you get attacked by a guy wielding a small knife.I can guarantee no freaking human skull will stop it and it will take off a hand or a foot. it is razor sharp.A novelty hatchet.

Is this green one a FM81 or a FM78?

I purchased a Glock field knife shortly after I bought my first Glock, around 30 years ago. I don't know what model # it is, but it does have a root saw. I've used mine, but not a lot. It stays in an old gym bag of basic survival gear. (not sure that I'd call it a "bug-out bag".) They are decent fixed blade knives. I also have a Morakniv, which is also a good knife. Both knives are bargains, and either knife will suit your needs.
