Hungarian PA 63 9mm Makarov

I have a new EDC gun.
I purchased this pistol about 6 month ago and been shooting about 500 rounds through it and it has never failed to go bang.

The gun is made by FEG in Hungary and has a aluminum frame and steel slide and build very much like the Walther PP including the takedown.
It is a straight blowback design too and I cover this a little more further down.
It was used by the Hungarian police for many years and shoots the 9mm makarov round which is a beefier 380acp and designated 9x18
The gun is very well made and easy to cary for me.
The P63 is very accurate and surprised me quite a bit with it's accuracy to be honest.
It is a single / double action and goes to single action after the first shot kind of like the 1911 or Walther PP / PPK.

The double action pull is short of being horrendous to say the least.
I had to buy a spring set and had my gunsmith work some magic too.
It has been much improved to a point where I don't mind shooting it in double action at all.
The mag hold's 7 rounds and one in the pipe.
It does have a slide mounted safety / de-cocker which I don't use or would trust either, even though I have tried the de-cocker several times at the range and it never failed but I just don't trust them on any of my guns that have one.
One other thing that some people may not enjoy when shooting it is that the gun's recoil is quite snappy and can hurt your hands after a few rounds due to the straight blowback design and the snappy ammo.
I fixed this somewhat with a rubber sleeve that I put around the grip and that has little rubber nubs on the inside of it and really helps.
I can shoot 50 rounds without feeling it still hours later lol.

Now I realize that this is not mainstream and not a EDC for everyone but I like the little gun and I got it pretty cheap.
I got the Gun, 2 mags the original flap holster and some cheap inside the waist style holster plus almost 200 rounds for $175.00

Ammo is a little harder to find as it used to be and goes about $13 to $17 for most places incl. gun shows.

Now don't go ragging me about my photographic background as I don't have a Bac style carpet

If you have one let me know how you feel about it and if you don't but ever have a chance to shoot one I encourage you to do so.
If you have any questions feel free to ask me.

I've had one since 2001.
For some years now it's been on a magnet, under a table by the back door.

A decent gun.

It may choke feeding some HP defense rounds.
That's a pretty cool Idea M2
I have not tried any HP rounds at all.
I kind of think of that round as a beefier .380acp and feel it better as round nose but I may be wrong.

I've had one since 2007. Its a Walther PPK clone, but with an aluminum frame. I personally think the quality of them is average and I feel they're horrible to shoot. Its got one of the worst DA trigger pulls ever.

Not exactly one of FEG's best efforts, in my opinion, especially since the company has made some quality firearms over their long history.

LOL I don't disagree with you on that Double action trigger pull but the spring kit and some help from my gunsmith made it pretty usable from what it was before.
That grip sleeve made the recoil bearable too.

Some of them do. I find nothing charming about the PA-63.

I guess it looks kind of cool...
Well, it is a classic utilitarian pistol, a Trabant of firearms. The seat may not adjust, the heater non-existant and the windshield wiper was there to serve only as a fashion statement, but the Trabant had, and continues to have, a sad but loyal following.

People will get a PA-63 simply to feel better about the Llamas, Charter Arms and Sccys that form the rest of their collection.

Those rubber sleeves probably do help. I shot 50 rounds through mine and it gave my right palm one hell of a pounding. I'd rather shoot one of my 44mags.

Having said that, the little Radom P64 may be worse...

I got the first part but don't understand what you are inferring on the second part of your post?
I don't own any of those other brands that you mentioned? and is not why I purchased this gun.

Years back when the PA63 was selling for about $90 and the Russian and East German Makarovs were selling for about $150, some less than honest dealers would tell uninformed buyers that the PA63 was a "Makarov" and jack up the price on the PA63.

At a gun show I was standing there when a dealer was trying to pull that crap.
I told the buyer the PA63 IS NOT a Makarov.

The dealer got pissed and said, "It uses Makarov ammunition".

I said, "My Ford uses gasoline but that doesn't make it a Corvette".

While I have one, it wouldn't be my choice for EDC. Just because its a real ***** to shoot, IMO. Changing the springs helps, but it is still not my idea of a dream gun. I wouldn't go so far as to call them junk, because they are not, but they sure aren't something I'd call a pleasure to shoot. You got a decent price because I paid $125 for mine several years ago (prob 07?) without any ammo.

I also have a PA-64, which is also not a dream to shoot, but it sure is pretty with these aftermarket grips!

Yes my dream gun it is not but right now it is the smallest gun I own and I shoot it really well and it never failed me either.
If something happens and I would have to use it and then loose it due to it being held for evidence or so I would not be heartbroken either.

I'm looking at a Kahr CW45 right now on a trade and it could possibly take the edc role later but for the time being this is it.

Liked mine while I had it. Recoil was a little snappy but very manageable.
Traded it for a CZ-82. Better gun overall. I've sold it too though.

Kind of miss the PA-63.

All the Best,

the PA63 is my second favorite 9X18 pistol. My favorite is my Russian Makarov IJ70. I happen to think that it is very comfortable to shoot and it doesn't hurt my hand at all. If you want to feel pain, shoot the Polish P 64, its a palm pounder! I've had my PA-63 for about 7 or 8 years, I think I paid 120 or 130 for it at a gun show, it's an awesome gun to say the least! Enjoy yours :)
