Who cares? What you currently own, you have until you get BORED WITH IT. What you acquire depends on personal use and desires, and impromptu purchasing based on human desires. New owners will buy Gen 5, 6, 7, 8.... Ultimately, a model becomes obsolete when support and replacement parts disappear.

Try to buy or find someone to install an iPhone3 replacement screen. Why waste the time and effort.

Who really wants to worry about a 10 year old generation model gun anyways? You buy a newer, younger replacement when you can afford it or get around to it. Can't impress the bois at the range with a gen4.
It took the Gen 4 to even get me to look at a Glock and I bought 13 of them. The only Gen 3s I own were my dad's and a few RTF models. Gen 6 might spark that interest again for me, but closest I'll ever get to Gen 5 is my wife's and my dad's 42 and my 43. Gen 5s and iPhones are right up there with Hi-Point as far as I'm concerned. I still enjoy shooting my Glocks, but no longer carry any of them. Wanting to impress the "bois" at the range? What...do you want a date with them or something?
