Diamondback DB380

A while back I made a post about getting a pocket pistol for when my G42 just isn't small enough. I wanted an original LCP but every time I found one locally they were over priced. I stopped by one of the local shops and they had new DB380s out the door for $215. I've heard some complete horror stories about Diamondback but they all seem to be from when these pistols first hit the market. The shop sold out but offered to order one for me and I asked if they could get me the new Gen 4 version and sure enough they were available. I decided to roll the dice and I'm really happy that I did!
I took my new DB380 to the range and it ran flawlessly out of the box! All I did was clean and lube it. I ran about 85 rounds through it with no trouble at all, a box of blazer fmj, the remainder of some winchester white box and 6 xtps I had in a spare mag for the 42.
I'm not 100% sure I actually got the Gen 4 version, it does look the normal Gen 3 and I showed the owner the differences. He said it was indeed a Gen 4 that the differences were mostly internal. I figured if I did have any issues I could send it in to Diamondback and get it replaced. Luckily I had no issues with it so either way I'm happy I took the risk. It shot really well, recoil was about the same as the 42 and it ate everything I fed it.
It seems like DB really has turned things around, the new Gen 4 DB9s are supposed to be alot better as well. Just figured I'd share my experience as you never hear anything good about Diamondback.

It's actually not that bad, I'm not sure if it's the shape of the trigger or what but it reminds me of a double action only lighter. I have a tendency to shoot it like I shoot revolvers with a little more finger on the trigger. I'll do some dry fire later and pull it like I would a glock and get back to you.

Compete utter garbage with dubious and I mean dubious engineering. Take it apart and look at the trigger mechanism. WOW! Only a drunk walrus could design some absolute garbage like that.

I owned one. It was hot garbage. I am usually able to fix everything I own. I am a multi platform armorer. This gun made me shake my head. I personally think its design is a travesty. I would never own another one.

The LCP on the other hand, can be found online for like $225 and its a solid pistol.

Way to **** on a guy's thread that's excited about a new gun he just got... 😒

Garbage firearms

Total garbage
Again, see post 8... I've never owned or shot a DB firearm, but no matter what cheap brand is posted, you always knock it. You're the most snobby gun snob on this forum, and I've known and interacted with you for years.

Still I "somewhat" respect you, Brian, but you've become so snobbish towards every "low-end" maker, even more so than in the past several years, that it just makes me (and most others) see it as comical.... not everyone can afford to buy the overpriced junk you do...

TL;DR.... Don't crap on a guy who's excited about his new gun, just because you're a gun snob that has shown tooooooo many times over the years that if your pistol was less that $5K, it's junk....

It's going to eventually dissuade folks from posting about "cheaper" firearms they've acquired.

Sorry to pile on. But it's a POS company. And the people who run the place are complete morons. I have one of these stuffed in the back of a drawer somewhere. Someday when I'm really bored, I'm going to either hammer it flat with a sledge hammer or cut into pieces with an angle grinder. Maybe I'll take a poll on different ways to destroy it and video the winning idea. Again. Sorry to the OP. I hope yours is better than mine. I really WANTED to like the thing. The size and glockish shape are what drew me to it.

I have a db9 gen/2(before Taurus took the reigns) smaller than anything else long trigger not too rough. 6" at 15 yards for a true pocket pistol is nice. I use it swimming/kayaking in a zipper pocket in my shorts it's not super durable so I don't put thousands of rounds through it but it's my gun for when I can't carry a gun. Better than a pointy stick.

The gen 1 rear block sheared in half they sent a whole new trigger assembly to me. So it's gen 2 now (it was a V shape so sheared at the point where the two halves came together the new one had a crossbar at the top )

Each gen is seemingly better. Still don't think they are a great choice

Honestly I got it and in pink to show CPL students small and pink isn't a beginners gun. Hurts my hand in 15 rounds. But 3 days s a year I enjoy having it.

Taurus does not own them.

Taurus took over distribution for DB for a very short while. Rumor was that was Taurus trying to get with DB to bring their own AR15 into the US. The partnership led to DB laying off staff. Taurus then walked way from that partnership. Should tell you a lot. Relationship between Diamondback and Taurus

After owning 4 DB9s from all the generations, I'm curious what the OP is saying.

If you go to the DB forum, there is in fact no person posting there for a long time. I recently posted about some misinformation there, you'll see me there, but no one but 2 people post there for a long time. The most recent glowing review had a person saying their pins were walking out and the sights didn't stay on--which is odd to call it "good" but then the gun stopped working.

All 4 generations of the DB9 have been updates, not cosmetic. Different RSA, longer grips, different pin placement, different triggers, different followers, different mag springs. That should tell you everything.

I've owned 4 DB9s because I want them to work. Simply put, they don't. That isn't being a snob. That's my reality. And it's very telling that their G4 RSA still has problems. The gun components aren't meant to last at all.

The reason I want the DB9 to work (which it never has) is this is my LCP on top of one of four DB9s I've owned. They are exactly the same size.

That sucks they haven't worked out for you. I honestly think maybe the DB9 is just too small for a 9mm, all those little parts and 9mm pressures can't mix well. I tried to sign up for the Diamondback forum myself but it won't let me for some reason, I never get the confirmation email.
I know DB has put out some lemons forsure but to me it was worth the risk. If I could've got an LCP for the same price I would've got the Ruger instead. I just didn't see a point in spending another $100 when I'm barely going to use it. It's not replacing my G42 it's just for when I need to go as small as possible. I'm honestly surprised I had no issues with it, I was expecting it to have issues for at least 50-100 rounds but everything ran smooth. It looks like they polish the feed ramps now, mine has a mirror finish so maybe that helped. 🤔

There are 100 "fixes" like polishing feedramp, using a Kahr spring here and there, using the Kahr RSA, shortening, blah blah blah. There is no fixing it.

When Magguts cancelled development of their DB9 springs, that told me mag is inherently flawed. With now 3 generations of mags including a new red follower in the Gen4, we can guess that's probably why Magguts announced and then cancelled.

I'm guessing I just got lucky? Who knows maybe it'll have issues down the road but for my intended use I think it fits the bill. It's rare that I need to go smaller than my G42 so if it comes down to carrying the DB or not carrying at all I'll take the DB. It went 85 rounds without an issue, it wouldn't be my first choice but I trust it enough to take it over nothing at all.

Not sure about the garbage. We got a 1st gen DB380 from a relative for almost nothing. We have not shot it a lot, but it has been 100% reliable so far. .380 hardball only. We have enough confidence in it that we have dropped it in a pocket on occasion.

We briefly owned a DB9 which was also reliable, but a 9oz pistol launching 9mm ordnance proved too violent (for us) to shoot accurately. We let it go for something a bit more civilized.

We trudge on.

My DB AR has been solid.

As a side note I did have one minor issue, after my rifle taking a beating on an out west hunting trip. Somthing I could have fixed myself, but I thought I'd give their CS a try. And I have to say they were some of the absolute best I've ever dealt with.

Ugly. However Diamondback makes a pretty nice looking revolver. Don't know much about the quality though. I've never seen one in the wild.

WHY, WHY, Why do people like the 380, when the 9mm is available and adds minimal dimension?

It is beyond me. Like owning a 38 when 357 is available. WTF

I have a DB9FS, that is close to 8 years old, and it works great. Ugly- YES. But works just perfectly fine. I would not go for a 380, made by anyone, including Glock.... but especially not DB.
BTW, Taurus owns DB, so the Taurus haters zombie horde can jump in here.

To be clear, it's 100% in a agreement with everyone the DB forum that the current version of the DB9 (gen4) the Glock cut rear sights will fall off.

...

How do you manufacture a gun and sight that can't even stay together in this current day? It's just wild DB is around. Shame the DB9 is such a dumpster fire. It's the size of 9mm I want. I'd pay a lot for something that functioned in the DB9 exact size.

#58 ·
Honestly with the way they beefed up the Gen 4 DB9 it's the same size and weight as the G42. The G43 really ain't much bigger. Now if someone could make a functional 9mm the size of the original DB9 that would be impressive. The Gen 4 really doesn't offer anything over other brands that are reliable, maybe a 2 or 3 ounce weight savings.

I recently got a gen 4 DB380 as I’m a pocket pistol nut. Smoother shooter than Ruger LCP 6 round and LCP Max 75th anniversary 10 round by a wide margin, probably because of the lower bore axis. Points naturally for me. Very accurate for a tiny pocket pistol. Unfortunately mine jams with a full 6 round magazine plus 1 in the chamber so I carry it with 5 in the mag and 1 chambered. Internet search shows this happens with various brands and models, mag spring might need more breaking in. Otherwise runs HST and hydra Shok deep just fine.

It’s a nice middle ground between my P32 and my LCP Max 75th. About 150 rounds fired so far. Will probably put tritium sights on it once I get past 500 rounds. Far prefer it to LCP 6 round model which for me had a lot of muzzle flip and was hard to aim.

PS the one in the photo above the earlier in thread is not a 4th gen, the 4th gen takes Glock 42/43 sights.

Range trip update: DB380 now at 200 rounds, runs HST and Hydra Shok Deep fine (both 99gr .380) but as I mentioned above with 5 in the magazine (5+1). Shoots so much flatter and more accurately than my LCP Max. And with the Max I have to paint the target with the front dot (combat hold?) while the DB380 is dead on with a normal hold where the top of front sight is over the target.

But then I shot a couple mags of 147gr through my 9mm Canik TP9SFX which has a 5 inch barrel and full size frame, man I forgot how easy that tbing is to shoot!
