What are your thoughts on consolidation? I just hate that I have so much hardware sitting around that's not being used at all. Discuss.
As years pass, desires can change. I actually went through a period when I rarely took any of my firearms out to enjoy them. Perhaps five years worth. Other life issues and a lack of time or desire had my guns sitting in the safe. I actually contemplated selling some of them.

Thankfully I didn't! Circumstance had me ease back into enjoying going to the range and training again. Soon I was going much more frequently and ended up buying a couple of new toys as well. Had I sold off half my collection, the cost would have been dear.

One final suggestion. Since you don't seem to care for the SP101, sell it. Use the money to purchase a basic reloading setup and the costs to feed the remaining centerfire guns will drop substantially. FWIW.

#1, ten guns is nothing, not that it isn't a great start. Keep building your collection - don't give up so soon.

#2, maybe concentrate on buying ammo for a while.

After the AWB ended in 2004 I went on a buying spree. I went from ten guns to 70 guns in less than ten years! I grew my ammo stash to 25K+ rounds and I have too many mags to count.

Now is the time to BUY - NOT SELL!!!:wavey:

Not everyone wants 70+ guns.

I'm consider starting a group called "Guns and Ammo Anonymous". We'll meet every Wednesday at the local shooting range to discuss our addiction to guns, ammo, and other accessories.

If you are going to sell some off, I'd get rid of some of the cheaper ones and get one or two really high quality guns. If I sold what I have right now I'd turn a pretty large profit over what I paid. Then again a lot of mine aren't very easily replaced.

Well, my thoughts are don't sell them.

Personally, I don't see why you would. You didn't articulate any good reasons. If you needed the money, I'd understand. But "I just hate that I have so much hardware sitting around that's not being used at all" doesn't seem like a very solid reason to me.

Are you short on space? Most people like tools. Just because you're not using something today, doesn't mean you won't want it tomorrow.

Personally, I've never sold a gun. I buy 'em. I'll probably keep buying them until I get too old to shoot (give me another fifty years or so). Then I'll hand them down to my kids.

Cheers,

You seem to have a desire for your possessions to have practical utility. If you view unused things as wasteful then by all means divest yourself of the offending items. Every thing we own carries a burden of responsibility in varying degrees.

However, after exchanging the firearms for money- it too carries obligations. If you stack it up unused then you end up with the original problem in a different form. At least you will have three guns to keep unintended hands from pilfering your pile money.

There are a couple of unwritten rules, that apparently, you don't know about...

Number 1. He who dies with the most toys, wins!

Number 2. You must own at least one gun for every year of your life in order to be awarded another year.

Seriously, anything that says "Taurus" or "Diamondback"on it, get rid of it!
:animlol:

If you said you had 10 cars and wanted to consolidate, I could understand but 10 guns are worrying you? Get a bigger safe, buy (2) more firearms and call it done.
For what? What good are toys you can't play with?

I only own two firearms. I might consider a third, but I highly doubt it. If you don't get to shoot them much, they're useless. They're also tying up money that could be used for something better.

So, if I were in the OP's situation, I would sell all of them. And then build/buy one AR, one shotgun, and one pistol. Make them exactly what you want them to be.

10 doesn't sound like too much. Though I could see selling some that you don't have a use for, to finance some you would have a use for. For instance I just sold a couple of .22s to finance more airguns to better fill the inexpensive plinking niche.

It sounds like you like your 20 gauge so I see no reason to sell that either. If money isn't a problem, though, and you don't intend to replace them with different guns, I don't think just thinking you have too many is good enough reason to sell. Guns retain their value very well over time (better than cash). If nothing else a few safe queens are a good backup plan if you run into financial problems later.

Me to. I have much less than then 50 years of life left, unless I live to be WAY over 100. But I've only sold three guns in my life. And I wound up regretting that I had sold two of those. I'm pretty close to having one gun for every year of my life.

But quality firearms, generally appreciate in value. I have quite a few that I could sell for several times what I paid for them when I bought them brand new. LIke was said, unless you're in desperate need of money or short on storage space, just hang on to them and let someone else dispose of them when you're gone.

I guess I also need to join 'Firearms Anonymous'. Ha Ha.

To each their own.

But a collection of guns is far from useless. What if you have a big family reunion in your town. At that moment, the SHTF. Cities are cut off, massive unrest. Your family all goes back to your place, barely making it. Within days the stores run out of food, and then mobs of desperate criminals start to roam. Killing, raping, and stealing food become the order of the day. Good citizens try to establish order, but have to fight it out.

Now, you were saying something about a bunch of guns being useless?

I understand the OP's quandary. Many of us have bought more guns than any reasonable man would see as 'rational'. It's because we love guns for various reasons. For example, I went on a Marlin jag a few years ago and acquired 20 or more lever guns that predate the company being taken over.

I'm at a point in life where I'm starting to think I have too many guns. I don't hunt anymore. Finding a fun place to shoot is increasingly difficult. Many of my guns are only handled during their semi-annual inspection and cleaning. I like 'em, but I'm not sure I love 'em like I used to.

So, I plan to start exploring the best way to sell a bunch of guns over the next year or two. It isn't that I need the money. It just seems wasteful to own 'things' that don't provide utility or substantial joy in ownership. Owning my 'collection' just for the sake of knowing they're mine no longer makes sense.

I'll keep a dozen or so guns until I die because guns are a significant part of who I am. I just don't need as many as I have now to be happy during my remaining years.

I recently consolidated my guns. Had way too many, and doubles of all the ones I like. I ended up getting rid of all my pocket guns minus my Lcp, no reason to have that many since if I can carry something bigger I will, and if I can't the Lcp can always tag along. Then I sold anything that I couldn't shoot well, if I can't group well with it, why waste my time on trying to when there are a few dozen other guns in my safes that I can shoot instead. Then I sold off all my 1911's minus my TRP. It has all the features I want in a production gun and I hope to one day own a night hawk or Wilson.

And who are these people? Certainly nobody I've ever met!

Same here, on both counts.
