I have a G-21SF Gen 3 and have carried it concealed for many years, love it, it's my go to weapon. Just recently acquired a G19 Gen 4 and trying to get use to it but because of it's smaller size I'm wishing I bought the G17 Gen 4. I carry both with plus P hollow point ammo so either will do for personal protection. You obviously are looking for Gen 3 and I don't have anything bad to say about that.

 

Thanks for feedback. I like the size of both and I guess it comes down to 10 rounds of 45 vs 10 rounds of 9 in certain aspects.

 

I have a Gen4 17 and a Gen4 21. The 21 is my nightstand gun but I occasionally carry it. The 17 gets carried a bit more but not as much as my Gen4 19 or CZ PCR. If you are going out into the woods the 21 would be my choice. Others will recommend the G20 10mm or G31 in .357 Sig for the woods.

Since you're limited to 10 rounds, the G21 would be the best choice, and for a backpack and nightstand gun the G21 would be the overwhelmingly best choice.

As a woods and trail gun I would carry the Underwood 45 ACP +P 255 Grain Hard Cast Flat Nose or the Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman 45 ACP +P 255 Grain Hard Cast Lead Flat Nose.

And for home defense, the Federal Premium HST .45 ACP 230 Grain +P JHP

I live in California, shot a borrowed a G3 21 and bought a CZ 97B (currently at Cajun Gun Works for the "E" conversion) to scratch that .45 ACP itch. If I could buy the G5 17 I would definitely buy the 17, otherwise I would pass on the 17 too because I have enough in the 9 mm category (CZ SP-01 w/CGW Pro Pkg, CZ BD w/CGW Pro Pkg, CZ D PCR w/CGW Pro Pkg, CZ P-01 w/CGW Pro Pkg, Glock 43, and my son has a G3 34).

I've have 6 G17s, Gen 2.5s and 3s. I also ran a Gen 3 G21 in competition for a number years. It's more than just round count of 9 vs 45, it's gun size also. The G21 is far more accurate than any 9mm Glock, even the G34 or G17L. Both models are excellent, however 9mm ammo is about 1/2 the cost of 45 (if you don't reload). Another option is the G31 (which I carry).

 

I guess if you want “variety” in different calibers or to just stock one caliber. I used to live in a ban state too but still carried a glock 19 9mm neutered mags. If you can test fire each and see which feels

California and the people who run things and the people who elect them have ZERO understanding of ANY part of the US Constitution and have forgotten what it's like to be Americans.

Look at the California University system. No freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, or freedom of religion unless it's Islam which is the state-approved religion.

I sold almost everything I owned and moved from California in 1998 and started over in a new city in a new state. It was the most difficult thing I've ever done but it was worth it to be living in a part of a the country that still feels like the country I grew up in.

But the scourge of Liberalism is slowly taking over here, too. Then where will I go when that happens and I want my country back?

 

Go with the 45 when limited to ten rounds. It makes a bigger hole.

I own both and they are both excellent. Truthfully, I enjoy shooting the 21SF more. Super soft shooting for a .45. The recoil impulse is very pleasant. I would never have imagined that shooting a 45 would feel so good.

I've also read that a 45 is a better choice for home defense since it has lower muzzle flash due to the lower pressure round. Seems like an arcane point since the 9mm is very easy to shoot, but still, something to consider.

Great choice on the 21SF.

Another vote for the 21.

The 9mm in my opinion has two advantage, for me. 1. Capacity or 2. it's ability to be chambered and controllable in a small slim package (G43, P938, etc). Your choices have neither, so go big.

BTW: I ran 10 round magazines in my G34 for many years (I compete in NJ). I've found the magazine springs wear out quite a bit quicker than with my "normal" magazines.

 

I would also recommend the Glock 21 SF

the G17 has more wasted space since it can only take a 10 rd mag (California)

the G21 is more practical and a good round for defense since your limited to 10 rd mags

I would rather be armed with 10 rds of .45 acp than 10 rds of 9mm

.45 ball is already a decent rd, by using a JHP it's even better

 

For the Ammo Cap.. I'd say Glock 21.. Don't rule out the Glock 22 for the same dimension width savings of the G17.

 

Ok, I live in California and was wondering everyones opinion about a gen 3 17 va a gen 3 21sf. Now remember in my state capacity is limited to 10 rounds so that should be factored in...

CA Option = Glock 37 Gen 3 in .45 G.A.P. That is ten rounds of .45 caliber on the G17 platform.

Now I am in CA and I EDC a G19 Gen 3. Remember; It's not the size of the gun in the gunfight; it's the size of the fight in the gunfighter.

I didn't like the huge grip of the regular Gen 3 G21 but the SF frame made all the difference in the world for me.

the wider grip helps absorb the .45 recoil, it's one of the lightest recoiling .45 autos

the SF model (short Frame) is smaller than the older model, have you held one? I dont have big hands and it feels fine in my hands.

 

I live in CA and unfortunately, it is hard to legally get past the 10 round limit. The most versatile Glocks I own are a G23 and G22. Get a 9mm conversion barrel (they will use the G17 mags) and a 357Sig barrel and you have 3 calibers. Then get a G21 and sell the G17. You now have 2 guns that you can shoot 9mm, 357Sig, 40S&W, and 45ACP.

 

The 30SF is good to go in Ca though.

 

So, a year later, how is the 21 for you?

 

I’m a 9mm guy, but since capacity is limited, you may as well go with the 45ACP.

 

Fortunately we get to compare weapons that each carry 10 rounds. Comparing the 17 with the 21sf; the 17/22/31 have the edge on size and (3) caliber selection over the 21; stand only 9mm vs 45 acp leaves many touting the 21.

The best option has previously suggested by another poster is the 10 round 30s. I have one left and can say this is your best bet of your proposal.

I would recommend shooting the different models; G21,G30,etc.....you just never know what you will like and dislike. I have tried to like the G19...but much prefer the G17


Hardcast ammo is a game changer as a bear stopper.
I picked up some of that hardcast woods ammo in .45 on a recent bowhunt [I couldn't find it here] I'm planning on testing it in my USP. FWIW, Glock doesn't recommend shooting it in their barrels

A few of my hunting buddies shoot the 10mm G20 & G20SF with hardcast as a bear backup weapon......but they all have rebarrelled and changed springs. My one buddy said he had hardcast bullets tumbling in some paper targets- thus the LW barrel.
