Well its actually unconstitutional just at face value.

First of all its a load that came out in 1991. Secondly the modern versions of it have better performance as its been enhanced so its not the same anymore.

And things like the PMC Starfire bullet design were coopted by almost all companies at this point so its the standard... common use ammunition all of which has different performance.

Had about 12 rounds of the SXT cartridges up until about 7 months ago. Shot them accidentally at the practice range in my P 89. They went right off. I probably had those in there since about 1997 or something. Probably worth about a dollar a cartridge, maybe a buck fifty.

IIRC, it was a shooting in Santa Clara County, California that was the genesis of the Black Talon bullet.

The county medical examiner discovered that a 9mm Winchester Silvertip bullet, which at the time had an aluminum jacket, expanded and the aluminum jacket peeled back around the bullet's shank creating several ribbons that had sharp edges. One of the ribbons cut the wall of an artery as the bullet passed by it creating a fatal wound. Had any other expanding bullet been involved then the bullet would have simply grazed and pushed the artery aside with very little damage.

Somehow this information made it back to the engineers at Winchester, and an engineer named Alan Corzine (IIRC) decided to try to design a JHP bullet with pointed jacket petals after it expanded that would also cut soft tissues as it penetrated. That's how the Black Talon bullet was born.

Remington's Golden Saber bullet also engineered a cutting feature into the jacket, but instead of pointy "talons" the jacket was skived to create sharp edges on the jacket petals when the bullet expanded.

The original Talons cam in the black box.
Then it came in 20 & 50rd L/E boxes after being pulled from the civilian market.
It was also made with brass cases. (Bottom box)

I was at my range a few days ago and a fellow member and I were yapping. We got on the topic of Black Talon ammo and I said I have a 50 cal ammo can full of 45, 40, and 9mm. He told me there are some pretty high $ per round if I wanted to sell it.

Well, ya sure I'd sell it or trade. Anyone have info on a reasonable price to see or where?

An aside: Black Talon ammunition ceased production at Winchesters call, it is not banned or illegal.
As I understand it, Winchester still used Lubalox well after the Black Talon BS media reports.

Winchester was on the cutting edge of a whole new era in SD ammo production...developed as a successor to the silver-tip ammo previously used by numerous LE agencies, this single round spawned the development of the many effective rounds we enjoy today...just Like Glock, we can thank WW for designing a round that changed the shooting world

I would love to hear your explanation on how the Ammo is unconstitutional.

Back when I was a young police officer, the 9mm was still around and a few years later everyone switched to the .40 SW round. the supply officer at the agency I worked for really liked me and we got along well. He gave me about 3 full cases of the rounds that were 9mm aftert the switch. I still have most of them but a few years ago I saw him and we started talking about that and said he wish he had saved some for himself. I later split what I had with him and he was ecstatic.

It is banned by name in some jurisdictions.
“For that matter, if you still have any Black Talons, you should put them in a box with your Members Only (jacket) and gasoline jeans and dispose of them safely. It’s time to let them go.”

I also remember something about ER doctor's almost losing fingers on television shows when they had to retrieve them from a felon's body.

I was able to order the Winchester SXT 9mm rounds which I believe was the same bullet minus the black Lubalox coating. It shot fine from my HKVP9. I only ordered a few boxes but I only used it that the gun range. I have carried Winchester 147gr Ranger-T and now I use the 147gr HST rounds instead.
