With primers, and powder now getting hard to get, do you think people will start to do a little experimentation? I know that a lot of folks here know enough to do it and be safe, but I got a feeling some people may get into a lot of mischief.

Especially those seeing a "market" who will be tempted to make a buck whipping up some reloads to sell.

I don't know much, but know enuff to know I'm stupid and never venture from the recipes in the reloading manuals.

Do you think we'll be seeing more "ka-boom" stories in the near future??

The ones that getting my attention are the guys asking if they can use large rifle primers in pistol rounds. Then there are guys telling them to just ream the pockets and it will be fine.

I see the most issues coming from people that probably have no business reloading in the first place and probably shouldn't be encouraged to.

If we haven't noticed by now, this whole Capitol attack siege Pearl Harbor 9/11 siege attack has opened Pandora's Box on censorship, regulation, and punishment. I'm sure some patsy they track down to his house will be discovered to be sitting on gasp over 50 lb of powder and clutches pearls "bullet making tools".

I can see it now.

"Next on CNN Investigates... do you know that one of your neighbors might have an ammunition factory that is capable of producing high volumes of military grade ammunition?! And that's not all... as it now stands... it is apparently legal! After the break we'll discuss:

Should ammo reloaders be licensed and regulated?!

Dangers of home storage of explosive ammunition components!

Should neighbors have the right to know that potentially hazardous practices occur nearby?!

How much ammo is really needed for target practice and hunting?!

We'll have guests from the Brady Campaign to fill us in on this alarming practice rhat might be occurring right next door."

It is those progressive presses. They will want us to pay licensing fees and jump thru the other hoops. Then we might be allowed to use only a registered, serial numbered, Lee Classic loader. Might.

How many new reloaders that are getting all of their how-to reloading knowledge and also their recipes from the internet because they won’t buy and read a reloading manual? You can learn an awful lot online, but the internet is still not the final answer for everything.

Well and we haven't even started on the EPA hazardous substance angle. Lead styphnate and all that stuff.

There will be if people who don't understand burn rate as it relates to case capacity and bore size start using just any old powder to make the gun go bang.

But If you have a 45-70 and cast your own bullets, your only problem will be primers. It's actually possible to make your own black powder but a better way to go would be to stock up on Unique pistol/shotgun powder. (and Primers) 14 grains of unique will propel a 405 grain bullet to 1200 fps and that's all you need for everything from mice to moose on the north American continent and it's good out to long ranges if you know your trajectory at those ranges. I've seen black powder shooters with custom 45-70 Rolling blocks with ladder sights ring the 800 yard gong consistently at my local range.

There are seven thousand grains in a pound of powder. that means you can load 500 45-70 cartridges with a single pound of Unique. the 45-70 JM Marlins are accurate guns and the micro-groove rifling works fine with hardcast lead if you keep your velocities below 1500 fps. A 300 grain bullet wouold use less from your lead supply but you'd have to experiment with different toads to see what gets you your best accuracy. That's the good kind of experimentation that won't get you into any trouble if you know how to reload.

Is there any other powder as versatile as Unique ? I haven't worked up any loads for my 45-70 yet but will once it is warm enough to use my chronograph. I bought some new powder last fall and loaded up some 45 acp rounds but they were much lower in velocity than the load data indicated they would be. They all functioned and shot well though. The powder must be at least 30 or 40 years old but is still good. I do have some new Unique to test out this spring.

I like Unique, but this whole versatility thing gets old. You can make any powder in that burn range do exactly the same thing as unique. WSF is almost identical, a tiny bit slower in some cartridges.

There are a couple things that set Unique apart. It is lofty, so arguably better suited for large cases than others, esp spherical powders, in the burn range.

Also there is 100+ years of been there, done that data for countless cartridges. And there is a whole history of load books with data for Unique covering shotgun, pistol, and rifle. Not so much with No. 5, Silhouette, N340, WSF, etc. The latters would call for extrapolating à la @George Kaplan , whereas you can probably grab an old reloading manual or Lyman cast manual and find a Unique load for rifle, pistol or SG.

Well maybe since Unique has been around for so long more data is available for it in different calibers. I know if data isn't available for a powder if one calls the mfg they might give you a safe starting point providing the powder you have is suitable. But powder with a lot of published loads is certainly more handy.

I normally don't load unique but picked up 8lbs. awhile back to put on the shelf. If I ever run low on other powders, not likely, I'll have the unique to fall back on or trade with.

LR primers in LP loads, no. SR primers in SP loads, ‘May’ be ok.
SR primer use in pistols is pretty common in the USPSA world and is actually better in some loads.

It significantly reduces the chance of a perforation in major loads.

You just have to make sure the FP hits hard enough to ignite the primner.
