What is the best tool to remove and install Glock front sights? Looking at the hex on the end of the screw there doesn't seem to be very much room between the hex and the adjacent slide surface to get a socket on the end.

I was thinking about getting the WIHA 3/16" socket driver. Is there anything wrong with it?

:dunno:

I use the following: Wiha 26547 Precision Nut Driver, Inch, 3/16 x 60mm. Got mine from Amazon.

Pros: it works, fairly inexpensive. I've used it on all my Glocks.

Cons: Deep socket; non-magnetic.

I add a little blue loctite to the screw, let it dry. Finger start the screw into the front sight and finish up with the Wiha tool.

I was using the same Wiha until I got a set of sights from Dawson Precision. They come with a cheap aluminum tool for the front sight that is the right depth (it's free so cheap is just a description of how it feels). I can drop the screw into it, flip the slide right side up and screw the sight on. It may feel cheap but it works like a champ.

Guess I could to fill the Wiha with something to make it the right depth.

Rub a magnet against the shaft. It should become magnetic.

Wiha 26547 Precision Nut Driver, Inch, 3/16 x 60mm, same here. I have the small glock tool you can buy and I keep that in my range bag as a backup now. The Wiha is perfect.

The problem with the cheap route of seeking out a standard Nut Driver is holding the Front Sight. Unlike a standard driver, the most current Glock Front Sight Tool is Magnitized. That in itself speeds up intallation and control as you will not continue to have the Front Sight fall off and tilt the tool, fidget and have trouble keeping your Front Sight in place. I do use an older Version of Glocks front Sight Tool to initially loosen the Night Sight that be Loctite in place. However I always transition to Magnitized Glock Front Sight Tool to install the new Front Sight.

It's best to get one of the tools made for the Glock front sight but, if you can't, then you need a very thin-walled nut driver or socket - something like AVMan is talking about.

To solve the problem of the socket being very deep and the sight screw falling into it, just fill it with something - candle wax, cotton, etc. - as long as you hold the driver and slide right, you could fill it with sand, but a few drips of candle wax to almost fill the socket would also help hold the screw in place while you screw it in.

Brilliant idea! Tried it and it works. Thank you.
