There are more than a few G17s that use the Ranger 127 gr +P+ and I have been next to a dozen or two at a time shooting that with no problems.

Maybe not rated for it, but it'll handle it just fine.
Rated and handled are two different words with different meaning. He asked
Is the G17 rated for 9MM +P+
and no it isn't.

Personally I wouldn't use any non-standard ammo in firearm, especially if it was something for self-defense. I don't need to give an attorney any extra ammo (pun intended) to attack me with if I used a handgun in self-defense.

It might not be rated for +P+, but the Border Patrol had excellent results with the legendary Federal 9BPLE, which is 115 grain +P+. In fact, if you read the book 'Stopping Power' by Marshall and Sarnow (sp?), there is a passage in there describing this combination as one of the most lethal handgun packages ever devised by man. Some of my friends are retired BP agents and they wish the agency had never gone to .40 caliber because the .40s have been so hard on guns ... which is also why other law enforcement agencies are also shifting away from .40 S&W, especially the 155 and 165 grain loads. Apparently 180 grain isn't so much of an issue.

I have a Gen 4 Model 17 and am not the least bit concerned about carrying the gun with +P+ Federal ammo (9BPLE). I tend to call this gun my 'poor man's AR15' because of its potential terminal performance in close quarters self defense scenarios ... mounted with my Streamlight TLR-1 HL and a 33-round magazine, I feel I can handle most lethal situations if necessary (God forbid).

How can it be rated for ammo that has no SAAMI standard? The ammo itself isn't rated, so how could a firearm be rated for it?

I honestly have no idea why people would want to shoot that stuff. If +P isn't good enough, change calibers.

The 9mm has more than one standard such as CIP, NATO, SAAMI.
Of the above the SAAMI is the most worthless for 9mm and causes problems for high quality pistols made to use high power self defense ammo.
The Glock manual cautions against the use of reloads because they might not meet SAAMI, CIP or NATO specs and states "Only use high quality commercially manufactured ammunition in the same caliber as your Glock pistol".
IOW, if it is factory made, it's OK.
The +P+ is factory made, therefore good to go and the Glocks love the stuff. Glocks run in to problems when they use the low power WWB type 9mm which is made for Kahr and S&W pistols that are not strong enough for CIP or NATO ammo.
+P isn't good enough, I like the 9mm and I use +P+. I recommend that you do the same.
There is a reason why they make the +P+, to get away from the ridiculous SAAMI spec.

To each their own. I don't shoot ammo outside SAAMI spec. I think the whole premise of +P+ is silly.

I'm perfectly fine with +P or even standard pressure stuff.

No, it isn't rated for +P+ ammo as there is no SAAMI standard for +P+ ammo. You can't rate something for +P+ if there is no standard.

The use of +P+ ammunition in the 9mms and +P in 45s is clearly listed as okay in the 1992 Armorers Manual..

So does CIP or NATO have a standard for +P+? Or a standard higher than SAAMI +P? What are they?

HK has rated the USP series as compatible with +P+. This picture is from page 21 of the manual that came with my AG dated USPf 9mm that I picked up on my birthday in 2007. I can't find my Glock Armorers Manual or I would post the page from it.

I have shot a boxcar load of +p+ 9mm through Glocks and they lapped it up like a hungry cat. There may be no SAAMI spec for it but Fed., Win. & Speer load it for LE and Rem. did years ago. The Secret Service was even issued the Rem. version at one time.

Nothing to worry about. Move along people. :wavey:
