I know, if powder was available I wouldn't consider it, but all I have is titegroup and red dot. A buddy has a pound of blue dot and I need some deer loads. I have read the warnings and checked the data. For a 240gr LSWC would it be safe for hunting velocity loads? Anybody use it and have some data on those bullets? Alliant only shows a 200gr JHP and a 240gr GDHP.

The Lyman Cast Bullet handbook #4 lists Blue Dot data for a Lyman 240 gr cast bullet. CCI 300 primer.

Start = 14.0 @ 933 fps. Max = 15.5 @ 1159 fps. (38,300 CUP).

There is also data for a Lyman 245 gr Keith-style looking cast bullet.

Start = 14.5 @ 1034. Max = 16.0 @ 1194. (36,600 CUP).

I don't know why that wouldn't work on deer if it groups adequately for you.

Never personally used the data, so I can't vouch for it.

Use the midrange jacketed data for the lead bullet, work it up if you want, but a moderately hard 240gr LSWC @ 1200fps isn't staying inside any deer.

1100-1200 is gonna be the target velocity. I will be getting another 44 next month and I am leaning towards the super red hawk, but even then I doubt I would ever load anything much hotter. From everything I have read and heard 240gr at 1100 should be sufficient for my use. Thanks for the info!

I've loaded your standard 240 grain mass-produced swc-bb with that Lyman 16 grain load of Hercules Blue Dot and always liked it. Even in a 4-inch S&W 629 I felt like it was more of a moderate load; nothing like a 240 JHP and 24 grains 296.

No doubt 15 to 16 grains of BD would penetrate your average deer lengthwise.

NOTE: Stick with the standard large pistol primers. Magnum primers aren't needed, or desired, with BD IMO.

I've got an old Hornady manual that list Blue Dot charges for240 grain jacketed hollow point, .430. Low end is 15.2 grains @ 1100fps and 19 grains at the high end for 1350fps.

I've shot a lot of lead cast gas checked with 18.5 of Blue Dot and got really good accuracy from it.

My hunting bullet. I have since had the gc removed from the mold, just not needed for bullets under 1400fps or so.
