What's the point of the point on a trigger guard?

Like the title says, what's the benefit of having that point there? There are plenty of handguns and rifles that have rounded trigger guards. Sig makes a SAS (Sig Anti Snag) version that do without it also.

I've seen lot of picture of Glocks here that have the trigger guard rounded.

So what is the function of that "thing"?

"Back in the day" it was all the rage to have the trigger guard squared or hooked to aid in a two handed hold. In theory you were supposed to grip the hooked trigger guard with the trigger finger of the "off hand" and pull, while the gun hand pushed forward, locking the gun in an isometric triangle. Before too long manufacturers incorporated the hooked trigger guard into their own designs. It was something cheap to do that made the gun look really racey.

Apparently not long after that, the style fell out of favor and everybody forget about it.

Sort of like leisure suits.

CajunBass is right......for a two hand grip using the front of the trigger guard with your off hand.

Look around......a lot of newly manufactured firearms don't have the squared trigger guard. Very few people actually use it, and it's a loser, if aesthetics are considered.

If you guys aren't putting the index finger of your off-hand on the trigger guard, how are you holding the gun??
I nearly always use a two hand hold, but never use the front of the trigger guard for gripping with my off hand.

I'm right handed, and grip the pistol with my right hand, as you'd think a right handed person would hold the pistol for a one-handed shooting grip. I take my left hand and wrap all the fingers around the right hand just below, and not touching the trigger finger of my right hand......sort of like a fist within a fist. Both thumbs are on the left side of the pistol grip. Nothing in front of the trigger guard.

Same as hogship. I found when I used the "hook" I tended to pull my shots low, so I went back to my old "hand finds hand" grip.

I don't really have an opinion about the hooked or squared off trigger guard. I wouldn't buy a gun because of it, but I wouldn't reject one either.

Let's face it. These are both pretty ugly.
