Hey everyone, first off just want to start off by saying though I have been reading and learning a lot this is my first post and I am new to Glocks. I recently turned 21 and got involved w target shooting w a friend of mine and I went straight to Glock and never looked back.
I couldn't decide between the 17 or the 19 but wanted a 9mm for ammo prices. I was deadset on the 17 until I went to a nice size gun store Jan 2 and saw a NIB G19 for $440. I wasn't planning on purchasing my first gun till end of Feb to pay off some car parts I recently bought but the salesmen convinced me to put the gun on Layaway and I had 90 days to pay the rest and still get it for the $440 price tag. It was a done deal at that point.
Which brings me to this post were on now.....I'm so anxious to get it I'm tired of waiting knowing its mine and I have the money to pick it up at anytime I'm just trying to get my other stuff paid for before the new toy. I think I have convinced myself to just go get it next week when I get back in town haha, but I really wanted to say thank you to everyone for helping me get to this point and does anyone have ideas on what other things to be preparing as I wait for the gun...like cleaning or anything else other then get extra mags haha.

Sorry for such a long post but I am very excited to get my first glock and already have big plans for it and future glocks

Thanks Eric

Hi Eric, welcome to GlockTalk.

Got an old toothbrush? You'll need a small bottle of gun oil, and maybe a bottle of bore solvent (to clean the inside of the barrel). And a better cleaning rod is, well, better.

If you've not had any, get some good training too!

:wavey:

Layaway is good.
Gives me time to think.
Impluse buys and all.

Eric my friend, I hate to break it to you, but the excitement never goes away with any gun purchase, you'll only want another one. I've been shooting since I was 11 and buying my own guns for 20 years now and I still get excited with every buy. You'll just have to live with it. There's some ways to control it, like needing food to live, but you'll never be cured:supergrin:.

:agree: yep, this is very true. no matter how many you buy the excitement is still there! welcome to GT and excellent choice on the 19. great gun, congrats, be safe and enjoy! very nice deal you got on it too!

Tmygun is right, the excitement never goes away. I still get a thrill when I think about my G27 I bought last april. I just bought a new G17 last week, and I am still excited about it, and to add insult to injury, I am planning on getting a G26 in the very near future. To say I am excited is an understatement.

When the choice is layaway or whipping out the plastic, take the layaway.
Leave the cannoli.

In addition to avoiding finance charges, you get a cooling off period to contemplate whether or not you really want to make the purchase.

Lay away is your friend! No interest charges like grendelprime said. Half of my gun collection has been picked up on layaway. I have a little store that I've bought my last 5 guns from and he doesn't mind if all I can pay is $20 a week, he'll work with you no matter what you have going on.

And welcome to GT and additional congrats and nice choice on the 19. Give us a pic or two and a range report when you get the chance. Just be warned, those Glocks multiply like rabbits!

My first Glock was placed on layaway all be it for only 1 week cause I couldn't stand the wait. 6 months later I put a XD 40 Sub-Compact on layaway. I couldn't stand the wait so I went back 2 days an got it out. I had a year to get them out. Been dying to build a AR......it's killing me having to wait.

Not a layaway fan. The only thing I would ever buy without cash in hand is a house. I even pay cash for my cars, although they're not the 50k cars that I would want, I know I own it from the get-go and don't have a payment every month. Paying cash makes everything so much more satisfying. I'd hold off until you can pay cash and walk in and hit them with some c notes. :)

Hey, Eric. Layaway is a great way to buy guns. I've had a gun or 3 on layaway continiously at one or two of my favorite shops for the last ten years. Got a Marlin .44 mag carbine and a Glock G20 10mm on layaway right now. You can accumulate quite a collection before you know it.

Thanks for the info everyone and the heads up on the Glock bug, I am already thinking about a g17 or g23 for next purchase.
The layaway did work out pretty well for me to give me time to make sure the 19 was the right choice and to have money for ammo when I actually pick it up. The excitement has been here for a couple months and growing everyday haha but I know it will be well worth it next weekend when I pick it up.
Again I do agree with all of you on the good or evil part of layaway just figured I would see what everyone thought. Thanks for the warm welcome and please continue to add any good info I should know or any specifics I should be looking into.

Thanks Eric

What training would you recomend? I plan to just use it for target for the first year atleast then I may go for my CCW Permit eventually?
Basic firearms use and safety training would be a good start, and it could be priceless.

For instance, do you know the three safety rules?

3 specifics? Probably not. I'm alwasy extremely safe and cautious around any firearms. Always asume a gun is loaded, keep finger away from trigger until ready to fire. I have been to a basic class but a long time ago. The guy I go shooting with is retired army ranger so he's been showing me quite a bit asa well

I've bought 2 guns on layaway. The advantage to me was huge. First, I don't use credit cards. Secondly, i didn't have that much free cash available to buy them THAT day. However, I knew that they were not going to sit on the shelf for the next 30 days without someone else picking them up. $20 down was a great way to put a hold on them, and then I paid off the remainder in a more fiscally timely way.

Excellent! You have had some training.

You even got two of the rules.

Always treat all guns as though they are loaded.

Never point a gun at anything you can't afford to destroy (like yourself, or someone else, or your wife's TV).

Never put your finger on the trigger until you've decided to fire the gun.
