I'm getting confused about full metal jacket and steel casings

Just to make sure, " Wolf " uses steel casings, and they are a harder metal, and WWC and UMC etc are a different type of jacket, which is better for the gun?

The case and the jacket are two differnt things. All jackets you are going to come across will be copper, more or less.

Cases vary. Brass is most common, there is also steel and aluminum as well as brass with a nickel coating.

A brass case is the "best". *Edit: Nickel plated brass is better. ;)

Your Glock will run well on any of them. Just get whatever you can get your hands on at a semi reasonable price at this point.

Ok thank you, I apprecaite all your help !

So just to be sure, how do I know which is brass?

FMJ is brass?

Seems most ammo says FMJ
No. FMJ is full metal jacket. That is unrelated to the case. Most inexpensive factory ammo is FMJ. That is what most people shoot 99% of the time at the range.

JHP, jacketed hollow point, is typically carried and used for defensive purposes.

Brass case is default. If it's russian it's probably steel case (wolf, ___ bear, etc). CCI makes Blazer in Al case.

The description should have it in there. The usuals...Blazer Brass, Winchester White box, Remington/UMC are all brass case.

In the end it doesn't matter too much with a Glock unless you want to reload the brass, which I doubt you do.

It can get complicated!

JACKETED bullets include both "full" metal jackets and jacketed hollowpoints.

Bullet jackets can be made of copper, brass or thin steel (ususaly with a copper "wash" over the steel).

Cartridge CASES can be made from brass, aluminum or steel.

Brass cartridge cases may be coated with nickel. Usually, this is done for high-end defensive ammo.

Steel cases can be coated with laquer or polymer.

Note that beer-can (aluminum-cased) Blazer is perfectly good ammo. It is sometimes cheaper than any brass-cased ammo.

I only gave you the Reader's Digest version. Just wait til you read the original version and see terms like TC, FP, SP, CMJ, RNFP...and more!

Most practice ammo is "FMJ" (or some equivalent term) as this type tends to be cheaper. Self-defense ammunition is usually made with hollowpoint bullets and is more expensive.

9mm ammo mostly comes with bullets of three different weights, whether FMJ or HP: 115 grains, 124 grains and 147 grains. 115 grain FMJ tends to be the cheapest and most commonly used for practice.

Here is a quick ammo 101.
The thing you load into the magazine is called a cartridge. It consists of the case, the bullet, the primer, and the powder charge (see picture).
The bullet can be:
- ball (for target shooting or military use) or hollow point (for self defence)
- plain lead (bad for Glocks) or jacketed (lead covered with a thin layer of copper, good for Glocks)
The case can be:
- made of brass (most common, more expensive, reusable)
- made of nickel plated brass [thanks Gary Newport for the correction]
- made of steel or aluminum (less expensive, not reusable)

Hope that helps.

One correction: cases aren't made of nickel. Some brass cases are nickel-plated so they resist tarnishing and are a bit slicker, allegedly making them feed more reliably. Nickel-plated cases are reloadable (if they are boxer-primed--and all I've encountered are), but the nickel plating is quite hard, making the whole case somewhat brittle. This causes the cases to develop mouth splits sooner than unplated brass cases. I also don't like the fact that they are so slippery when I am trying to manipulate them in the reloading process.

I generally set nickel-plated cases aside to reload for lost-brass matches.

Congrats on the G19-have one myself. Some advice before you clean your glock-go to youtube.com and watch some videos of how to clean your glock-real helpful for a newbie.
As far as ammo:
Range ammo go with FMJ 115 grain
Self defense ammo-I use Speer Gold Dot 124 grain JHP-but Corbon, Federal hydra shok, Federal HST will all do great in your glock. www.ombexpress.com has some winchester ranger ammo for sale and it was in stock earlier. Go to the range and practice with different types of ammo and see which one you and your glock like the most.

Be safe and enjoy:cool:

Walmart had 24 box's come in this morning at 7am, and one guy took 20 box's of 100, and another guy took the last four box's. They were sold out by 7:10am.

They suggested come in every morning at 7am, I get there usually around 7:30am.

I called everywhere today, and can;t find none around by me

I want to goto the range this weekend and shoot with a buddy, but we can't find ammo :crying:

Just to add my 2 cents to the great advice on this thread,
I prefer to use the same weight round for the range(fmj) as my carry ammo(jhp). I also shoot a few rounds of my SD carry ammo at the range for memory imprint of recoil, flash, and accuracy. I am restricted to 147gr for on and off duty. For the range I've been using mostly Blazer and some American Eagle, for duty and SD Hydra-shoks and Ranger RA9T's (except when carrying in NJ-Federal EFMJ's).
