Hi, I just purchased a Glock 19 handgun today, and having trouble finding 9MM ammo around my me :crying:

I would like a descent range 9MM ammo, for shooting as a beginner, but I don't want to harm my new gun :shy:

Is a full metal jacket such as the wolf ok for range shooting?

I was looking to buy bulk, for say $200.00 for 1,000 rounds , is there any ammo I should stay away from, and also any good places to buy it?

Lastley, what grain,as theres different types, sorry, but this is my first gun, so I have some questions :)

I was thinking of Cabela's for ammo :whistling:

No, the ammo will not hurt the Glock...

Yes, the FMJ Wolf would be ok...

115, 124, 147 grain...115 FMJ for range, I use 124 JHP for personal protection

Your other questions are hard to answer...Pickup whatever you can find...Cabela's is a good place, but they are also backordering ammo.

Search local, internet, beg, borrow, etc...........:dunno::dunno::dunno:

Okay, based on your post, I'm figuring you don't have much firearms expericence. If that is in fact the case, here's my suggestions. Go out and buy a good quality .22 lr semi auto pistol, or a conversion kit for your Glock. Then buy a very large amount of .22 lr ammo, and practice, practice, practice.

The amount of practice that will be required to obtain a reasonable skill level will brankrupt you (unless you are wealthy) if you use 9mm ammunition.

My second suggestion is, find a good instructor to teach you how to shoot safely. The money spent on a good instructor, and lots of .22 lr will be worth more to you than $200 of the cheapest 9mm ammo.

How many rounds do you think hes gonna have to fire from his g19 with 9mm ammo to become profecient? Im not talking ninjer death killer but just able to use his gun?

Im thinking that after 500 rounds hell be more than ready. UMC 250rd 115gr 9mm packs at basspro go for 55 dollars near my house. Its not exactly going to bankrupt him.

If hes using that gun for self defense than he best be using 9mm rounds to get a feel for whats the deal. I think him practicing with 22 rounds outa his g19 is awfull advice. Not worth getting the conversion barrels and all the other crap when he could just be firing 9mm rounds down range getting the feel for it. Its not like the 9mm is tuff to handel.

I stay away from the wolf stuff in my glock just cause I get the UMC for a good price, they have it at cabelas too. Wolf runs great in my WASR.

Thanks, Yes, all though I'm a new shooter, and this is my first handgun at 41 years old, I still bought the Glock 19 to get used to firing a 9MM handgun, and I also want to get a concealed weapons permit.

I went to the range the other day, and shot 50 rounds out of a gun rental which was a Glock 19, and I did " OK " . After 50 rounds I had 2 in the bulls eye, and every shot hit the paper target all but one.

Thanks on the UMC, I saw they had that too. I had no idea what grain to get.

When I do get a concealed weapons permit, I plan on getting some hollow point for self defense.

As far as grain, it does not really matter for plinking ammo. Some folks try to get ammo that will hit at the same point on the target as they use for defense ammo, others just get whatever is cheapest and/or available.

When you get to defense ammo then you will get all kinds of advice on what uber cool new fangled JHPs to get, but that is for another thread. Just get some good FMJ in what ever grain is available and have some fun. I like S&B then Blazer Brass, then the win val packs @ Walmart, then Remington. Others, may have a different list.

You are probably not going to find 9mm ammo for $200/1000. Between $250 and $300 shipped would be a better estimate as of today. You can use any factory loaded FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) cartridges you can find. Shooting reloaded ammunition is not recommended and will void Glock warranty. Shooting unjacketed lead bullets is strongly discouraged.

I was going to buy Remington 9MM UMC, MC115G , such as this:
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...avAction=push&catalogCode=2UG&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20837&hasJS=true

Or Wolf 115G FMJ500 as seen here:

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...avAction=push&catalogCode=IK&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat601233&hasJS=true

Are either of these ok?

I know the FMJ stands for Full Metal Jacket, but what does the MC stand for ?

Or Wolf

DO you have a walmart near ya? You should be able to get Blazer Brass or Win Val packs for under $200/1000. The only problem is finding it in stock. I would look into that before Wolf.

First of all, for a new shooter you picked a mighty fine handgun in the G-19. If you treat it right it will last longer than you and might be the only handgun you'll ever need. Read the Glock manual front to back and follow the instructions. A light clean/lube that leaves the copper-colored gunk inside the slide is the first step and practicing the field strip takes maybe 15 seconds. Then when you go to the range I predict you'll be very happy with your purchase.

For range ammo you can use anything, but I don't use steel case ammo (like Wolf) even though Glocks will eat anything. That's just my quirk, I suppose. You can shoot any weight bullet from 90-grain to 158-grain in 9mm and it won't hurt anything; and you can also shoot +P and +P+ ammo with no worries whatever.

I've never used Georgia Arms ammo but lots of people have and they like it. I don't know how far behind they are in shipping but whoever you deal with you should be sure the ammo's in stock before you place an on-line order. Wal-Mart is hit-and-miss with their 9mm and I've been told to call at 7am to ask if a shipment has come in overnight. The 115-grain Winchester White Box ammo is probably the most ubiquitous 9mm range ammo around, with Blazer Brass and Remington a close second. If you find aluminum case ammo it will do you well also.

The WWB will run around $22/box of 100 rounds at Wal-Mart, so roughly $70 or less will get the right amount of break-in ammo through your new G-19. If you can find any premium JHP rounds at anything near a reasonable price I recommend you pick it up. You'll feel better having it for home defense until you can find the exact JHP round you want. I was optimistic about the ammo situation until today when I spoke with someone in the industry, who told me that the ammo makers have been running 24/7 because of the demand. And now according to him the Canadians are starting to buy in bulk because they think the Americans are going to suck up every last round coming off the assembly lines. He thought it would be at least two years before things get back to normal, and it could be even longer depending on the stupidity of the electorate. So for peace of mind grab some good JHP if you can, while you can. Bass Pro Shop carries the Winchester SXT bonded ammo and it's still at a decent price --- or so I've been told --- if they have it in stock. I was there a couple of days ago and the 9mm was gone but they did have some .40S&W, which leads me to believe the 9mm is occasionally on the shelf.

Good luck with your new G-19. It's a great pistol.

Ok, I'm not sure what that means, so If I buy the Wolf FMJ , It will not vois the warrenty then right :dunno:
Don't worry about it. Glock will stand behind their gun.

Get whatever factory FMJ you can get your hands on without getting ripped off too much.

Thanks so much!

From what I been reading, seems the " Wolf " FMJ runs alittle dirty.

I also been reading, like you guys just said, the Remington UMC is alittle more, but shoots nicely.

I just found out a local store will have some to sell on May 2nd, and they only sell the Ammo on Sundays.

They quoted me $14.99 a box of 50 for the UMC 9MM ammo, and they said if you buy a case ( 500 ) the price drops to $12.99 :wow:

I plan on being there at 10am as soon as they open to buy some

They also sell the winchester White box, and others, I can't wait, I found a place to buy ammo! :faint:

MC, with Remington, stands for "Metal Case," same as "Full Metal Jacket."

WWB, Blazer, Blazer Brass and Remington/UMC seem to be the most popular around here. There are plenty of other good choices though.

Start calling your local Walmart(s) sporting goods departments every morning possible. When they get some in you can usually buy 9mm Blazer Brass at @8.97/50.

I scored 300 rounds at that price last week. :)

Personally, no steel case stuff, except in AKs, unless its an emergency situation. Probably fine, but I rather not take the chance. This is not because the Wolf is dirtier, but because steel is harder than brass. Maybe I am being illogical, but that is my choice.

Either one of those two is OK, but you will have to wait 2-4 months to get them from Cabela's. Keep checking online dealers, once in a while some of them get ammo in stock. Or place several backorders from different dealers (they usually will not charge your credit card until the product is in stock and ready to ship).

"UMC" is just a model name for a line of Remington cartridges. They have full metal jacket bullets.
"Wolf" is a brand of Russian-made ammunition. It has steel cases (instead of brass), so it is not reloadable, and some ranges do not allow its use.

UMC is an acronym for Union Metallic Cartridge, a company acquired by Remington a long time ago.
