Xtreme 165gr .355" 9mm bullets, WHY?

Ran across some Xtreme 165gr 9mm bullets at work the other day. At first I thought it was a misprint, that they'd mixed up the 165gr 40cal bullets with the 9mm label but nope, they're really is a 165gr 9mm bullet. My question is WHY? Loading a 147gr bullet effectively nuters the 9mm down to 38spl ballistics so why would you want something even heavier that's going to give even less velocity?

At 9mm minor, the recoil impulse is quite soft, subsonic, very fast shooting. I know quite a few idpa master & expert guys running 160-165 @ 800fps.

1) I absolutely disagree with your assessment of the 147gr's terminal effectiveness, but that is a different topic.

2) Probably so 9mm shooters, especially subgun shooters, can use less powder for the same recoil impulse. This would give a quieter report without sacrificing functional reliability. If they are meant for defenseive uses, then it sounds almost exclusively like a suppressed subgun bullet (because a 147 pushed to modern defense load pressures will be supersonic out of most 16" barrels), though at that point Id run a .357 158gr XTP before some unknown like this 165.

A friend of mine loads 158gr .357 bullets in his 9mm. Watching him, it's like shooting a pellet gun in IDPA. His STI stays pretty flat and the splits were fast. I'm not wild about .357 bullets in a 9, but if the Xtreme 165's are made for a 9, I might have to take a harder look at those.

Don't let the 0357" dia scare you, particularly in a glock, especially lead or soft plated. Most glock Oem bbl shooters using lead or coated lead are shooting 0.357" or even 0.358".

I guess I should've been more precise in my response. He loads 158gr jacketed hp's in his 9mm. I was going to get some of those and try them, but if Xtreme makes a heavier bullet, I only have to drive it to 788fps to make 130pf. Might have to play around with the springs in my STI a bit, but I'll see if I can work up a pellet gun load, too!

I run a 9-10# spring in my 1911/9mm, runs fine.

The only reason to spend more $$ on heavier bullets is to get a soft shooting, reliable 9 minor load. Other wise, I shoot 115gr or 124gr @ 1050fps + for just 9mm plinking ammo, cheaper.
