Why Are HK91 Prices So Low?

What is up with H&K91 prices?

I browse armslist and I see multiple HK91s (actual H&Ks) for under $2000 and some $1500 or under.

Of course there a bunch at $3000-4000.

But what is causing the prices on HK91s to be so low? Right now they are not much more than PTRs.

My theory is most of the cheap one are coming out of CA so maybe they are not allowed any more? But I see a few out of CA for good prices.

Or maybe they have just fallen out of favor and prices will stay low?

They imported 48,000 of them between 1974-89 so it isn’t like they’re rare but I see what you mean. In the early-2000s they were high then dipped (then 93s went up). I think part of it these days is that there are quality alternatives (not Century guns).

With the exception of HK 94s, pre-ban HKs are way down (hell even 94s are compared to where they were years ago).

No they are high quality. Better than what I have seen $3000 rifle (18 months ago) going for.

But then why wouldn't DSA hurt the market or PTR before?

Maybe the AR 308 is killing values.

I can't figure the prices out.

The gun is over 50 years old. I've never had problems getting parts, RTG carries just about everything and they have mags for $9. There are other vendors for parts also.

You are correct though about the brass. Even with the mag buffer, it chews up brass terribly. Its not worth the effort to light load and shoot through another chamber to blow out the dent and then reload again to shoot in the HK.

Escrow accounts or credit card help if it is sight unseen.

That said FTF on armslist purchases they were what was advertised.

HK mags are relatively cheap. They are around $8 now. In the past they were as low as $3. The expensive ones are the 5 rounders. The run from around $40 shipped to over $90 depending on manufacturer.

It may be because the HK91/93's cannot be made CA legal like the AR15's and AR10's. No one makes a conversion that allows it to be a fixed mag or requires the gun to be disassembled to reload. If you have taken down an HK, you will know that it is pretty much impossible.

Also, there were never any 10 round magazines made for HK's. Only 5, 20, and 30 rounders. That runs against the new CA law outlawing possession of magazines over 10 rounds. Even though they were purchased 30 - 40 years ago.

I'm going to have to move my HK9X's and accessories to NV to store at my other residence.

Just as an aside PTR sells converted HK mags that are 10 rounds.

The supply of HK 5 rounders is slim pickins. About 2 years ago they were $10-15 if you knew where to look. Now they are expensive if they have them in stock.

Wholesale price in G3 mags (New in wrapper) a few years ago were well under $1 but in minimum quantities and no shipping included in price.

I remember the aluminum ones for .99 from CTD. Botach just received some five rounders in now.

Good to know about the PTR conversions. I wonder if they sell just the conversion parts. I will check.

Now it is the rest of the gun I am having problems with in this state.

91's are brass eaters. HK parts (mags) are high, customer service sucks. Rather have an FN or AR.
Brand new HK mags are like 3 bucks a piece J have 75 new 20 rounders aluminum in a box in my garage .
And they are most probably the best made 308 magazine

I have heard that the HK 91 parts are drying up, so if you can get one for 1500, Id go for it, according to what i'm being told, and please correct me if I was given misinformation, that in 3-5 years the hk 91, PTR and even CETME are going to become very collectible...if this is in fact BS, I apologize, but i do seem to remember reading that and was told about it at my local gun shop.......and we all know how those story's can be.

Sounds like BS to me.

The Turks are still making plenty of these HK rifles. They're even importing the 91 and 93 clones under the Zenith brand.
