Why Alliant Power Pistol?

To help someone out I traded a pound of Bullseye for a pound of Power Pistol.

Going through Alliants website I don't see where Power Pistol offers any significant advantage over Unique. It seems to require a higher charge weight to achieve similar velocity. The biggest difference I found was about 120fps greater velocity than Unique in 10mm with 165gr GoldDot.

I don't regret trading for it. It'll be interesting to play with.

So, am I missing something?

I know it has more flash which is kind of cool.

All the Best,

Yep meters better than Unique, burns cleaner and can get you higher velocities in several pistols cartridges. I like a more bulky powder than fills the case. Plus PP being less popular is plus to me.(less likely to be bought as quick)

So I know I am not answering your question, directly, but today I had a chance to shoot some very special 9mm 155gr LRN bullets, which a friend cast for me. These bullets were very fine indeed.

I loaded up a hundred with various powders. My goal was some very accurate 900-1000 fps target rounds for one of my 9mm 1911's.

What powder do you suspect gave me the tightest groups at 930fps?

Right! Unique.

3.7gr of Unique, drilling quarter sized groups at 25yards, shooting like a runaway Hickok45... Sweet.

That is why Unique.

Unique and lead bullets was ordained by God.

It is the ultimate lead bullet powder.

Why Alliant Power Pistol?

Unique, Hodgdon Universal & Power Pistol have relatively close burn rates, just a bit different composition but they seem (at least in my tests) to have one thing in common. They seem to "wake up" when you move up the powder range - go too far and your accuracy starts to taper off.

I like power pistol in .380, 9mm and surprisingly in .45 ACP as well. My best "all around" load is in 9mm w/124g FMJ with 6.2g of PP. Burns clean, delivers consistent power without "over kick" and my accuracy is outstanding.

Same load in Unique, Universal (although good loads) just doesn't produce the same results.

What this comes down to is what you intend to do with (or expect to get) from your Unique vs Power Pistol loads.

Have fun experimenting

Power Pistol must be very good for some loads because it is one of the powders that is very hard to find even when there is no powder shortage or hording. HP-38 and 231 are also hard to find most of the time. I think PP is used a lot for 9mm.

You answered your own question. Pp allows higher vel with less pressures. If all you want is light to midrange loads, then unique will be a better it.

Power pistol makes is easy to develop a nice accurate load in 9mm. While its a little loud at the indoor range, I dont really have a problem outdoors. Of course I wear plugs and muffs....

I use Power Pistol for 40S&W (165gr and 180gr copper clad bullets from Xtreme) and 9mm (115gr and 124gr copper clad bullets from Xtreme). Because of the very small particles the powder measures very consistently no matter what kind of measuring device you are using. Power Pistol makes very accurate and consistent rounds.

Is the powder hard to find? I don't know. Maybe I had better grab some if I can.

I like Power Pistol. It meters better than Unigue and burns cleaner, I am told. I have Unique but have not used it so just going by others posts and experience.
I've used Unique and switched to Power Pistol. Power Pistol meters much better. When I was shooting Unique I could feel lighter recoil at times. When I chrono'd the loads I could put the two together, light recoil=lower velocity. I went back and started to weigh my charges after metering and found that I was getting up to a .3-.4 gr. variance.

Having said that, I think the amount of variance you get from a powder measure depends on the make, the charge bar/rotor that you are using and technique. When I loaded the above loads I was using a Dillon 450 using a small/pistol powder bar. I have since added a Hornady LNL to my bench. The Dillon will meter coarse powders like Trail Boss well enough where the Hornady will vary by a couple full grains! But switch to Power Pistol, 231, CFE-pistol, the Hornady measure rarely varies a tenth and the Dillon will vary by a couple tenths.

I do use PP with Lead bullets and get good results.

I use Power Pistol exclusively for my jacketed hollow points in 45ACP and 38 Special.

It provides great velocity and compared to Unique it meters meter and burns much cleaner.

The flash and bang is most certainly impressive also.

I have a bunch of power pistol that I bought for .45 acp when the powder finally started showing up on shelves again. then I found a bunch of bullseye and it's my go to powder for .45 acp so all that PP will be my go to powder for .460 Rowland where it appears to be very effective.
