I have a Ruger AR 556 with a fixed collapsible stock, carbine length overall. After handling some ARs with A2 stocks today, I'm thinking I would prefer that instead. What is required for switching to an A2? New buffer and spring?

Yep. Try an A2, A1, Magpul etc to see which one suits you most. Lots prefer the shorter A1 over the A2.Unsolicited recommendation: Before you go with the standard A2 stock, try to find a Magpul MOE stock mounted on a rifle and check it/cheek it a few times.
