I have a Ruger AR 556 with a fixed collapsible stock, carbine length overall. After handling some ARs with A2 stocks today, I'm thinking I would prefer that instead. What is required for switching to an A2? New buffer and spring?

Yep. Try an A2, A1, Magpul etc to see which one suits you most. Lots prefer the shorter A1 over the A2.

I actually tried that one too, and liked it a lot. Since I have an attached carry handle rear sight, and the standard A2 front sight, I thought I would go with a more retro look.

I'll check out the A1. Do you know how much shorter it is over the A2, offhand? Never mind, I found it quicker than I thought.

An A1 type stock in generally about 1" shorter than an A2.

    Fulton Armory has this.

    Brownells has this one.

You will need the rifle buffer kit for it.
