What MOA dot are you guys using in competition?

Hey guys,

So I am starting to compete with my glock 19 which has a 6moa vortex venom which is working out really well. I have a 43x mos with a 2 moa 507k and I don't know if it's just because it's 2 different companies but the 6 moa Venom does not look drastically bigger compared to the 507k. I am going to eventually get a glock 34 for competition but I can't decide what dot I want to use. I was thinking about getting a 3.25 rmr for my 19 and switching the Venom 6moa over to the 34 once I get it.

I was also considering just getting a second Venom for the 34 but I can't decide between 3 moa or 6moa. I do have an astigmatism which makes using the 507k circle reticle not great so I typically just use the 2 moa dot which in direct sun light needs to be turned all the way up but works perfectly. I don't get any bloom on just the dot as long as I'm on the right brightness setting.

So what do you guys think? What are you guys using for competition? I think I am leaning toward the rmr on my 19 and moving the 6 moa Venom to the 34 but I am open to ideas. Does anyone use a 3moa Venom any issues with washout in the bright sun?

Buckshot does that picture accurately represent the size of the red dot to your eyes while shooting outside. My 6moa Venom has a much smaller dot, but I know when I have taken pictures of my holosun 2moa dot depending how the camera focused it can appear bigger in pictures then it actually is. The 2moa work well on the 507k with its small window but I'm thinking I'm either gonna want 3moa or 6 moa. My worry is that I buy like a 6moa dot from another company and it ends up looking larger then my venom 6moa.

This is a good picture of what my 6moa venom looks like to my eyes out in the sun. If my camera focuses on the rear of the gun it starts to look alot like your picture of your 6.5

I use the 2.5 MOA DPP but I’m probably not the best to copy. I have astigmatism and middle aged eyes. I usually run the dot bright and shoot with a bloom. I have zero issues seeing the dot or knowing where the gun is aimed on any target even with the bloom.

I also use 3.25 RMRs on carry pistols. No issues there either.

I honestly think you can’t go wrong with either the DPP or SRO in any available dot size other than the 1 MOA SRO.

if you have suppressor height sights, could you post a similar picture as I did?

In the photo my RMR is set to auto brightness and it’s indoors on the kitchen counter.

it would be so interesting to see if the front sight is wider than your dot.

If I end up buying an rmr its gonna be hard to justify putting it on my competition only 34 over my bedside glock 19. So that really leaves me with either buying an rmr 3.25 for my 19 and putting the 6moa venom on the 34, leaving the 6moa venom on my 19 and adding a 3moa venom to my 34, or buying a 3.25rmr for my 19 and a 3moa venom for my 34. That last option is really more then I want to spend so I don't know if I can commit that much money to this considering considering other upgrades I'll be wanting to add to the 34.

I can say without a doubt that I spend entirely too much time obsessing over these minute details lol. My OCD really comes out when it comes to my guns.

Dots are just like guns and holsters and lots of other stuff... what works for me may not work for you.

I absolutely love the Holosun 507c with the 32MOA circle and 2MOA dot. I have an astigmatism but get zero bloom with the Holosun's, where as all the other dots I have tried I have to really adjust the intensity to control the bloom. A 6 MOA dot with intensity turned up looks like 12MOA starburst to my eye.

Most of the people I shoot USPSA with favor the Trijicon SRO 5MOA for the large window and dot.

For me the 32MOA circle is perfect, it covers 3" at 10 yards and I can use the center dot if I need to be more precise.

Target in pictures is a 1/3 scale USPSA target and pic is taken at 10 feet which equates to a full size target at 10 yards.

These are very helpful. I really like the 507 reticle. I have a 507k on my 43x mos but I use the 2moa dot only because indoors with my astigmatism the circle reticle becomes all sorts of crazy looking even on lower brightness settings. Outdoors with natural light it looks fine indoors it starts to double ontop of itself and I don't know which is the actual dot and which is the double from my eyes. Do you remember if that picture with the 3moa Venom was with the brightness all the way up? Do you find the 3moa venom difficult to use in bright sunlight? My 2 moa 507k works great in the sun so I assume the 3moa venom would as well but it does look pretty fine in your picture. Thanks again for the photos! Your photos are making me lean towards just leaving the 6moa venom on my 19 and doing the 3moa venom on my 34. I live in Vortex home state and they have an amazing reputation around here. A few of the guys at the uspsa event I did yesterday work for them and where telling me I should apply because they have like 20 positions open right now. I make good money working for ATT but if the pay was similar I'd jump on that in a heartbeat.

For steel 8, otherwise 6.

Or a 65 MOA circle with a dot - Holosun or EOTech. (Long gun).

Tried the smaller circle dot (HS) on carry optics pistol and found it to be too cluttered. Just went with the dot, turned up a slightly blooming.

I also experienced the clutter on my small Holosun 507K X2. I use the circle only option on that small screen, small circle red dot.

Most popular seems to be in the 2-3moa range and I have used them and a 6 and a 4-dot Ultradot that goes 4, 8, 12 & 16. After experience with them on my target .22 pistols and Glock 20SF, I much prefer the larger dots. A 6moa only covers 1 1/2" at 25 yards and for me is actually easier to shoot a smaller group. For general defensive use in the woods the larger dot is the only way to go.

One problem encountered is some have apparent parallax that is not really parallax like a scope but aberrations in the quality of the glass. I returned one that had 4 1/2" of movement at 25 yards!

After I discovered this problem on mine, did a little search and came across this well done article where even the highly regarded expensive dots did not fare well on the movement issue. The current ones I now own have none or 1/2" at most at 25 yards. Now if your use is a large steel plate at short distance only, anything will do!
