I'm looking to sign up for Practical Shooters this year and want to get geared up so I can get some range time in before the season starts.
What holster do you suggest for a Glock 17 or 21 for production class?

Easy on, easy off. Great customer service. You might want to take a look at mag pouches, too. Some guys like the two mag pouch, some like the singles. You're probably going to need to carry, at least, 4 on your belt, if you're shooting production.

Is that valid for production class?

I like Comptac belt holsters for IDPA and USPSA production. Works in both sports.
A dropped and offset is legal for Production Division, however not for IDPA (typically, who knows with the new rules ).

Perhaps a word of advise, if you get the competition bug, you may find yourself stepping up to a G34. If you think that is a possibility, maybe get a holster for a G34. It will work fine with the G17, and leave the door open for a future purchase.

The doh is only ILLEGAL in uspsa single stack. I had a blade tech for years and just ordered a comptac. I also am not a fan of the drop offset. I cut my draw time down to a tick under 1 second without the drop offset. The gun will sit higher and closer making it way easier to get a good fast grip on the frame. Also with the comptac you get all the attachments with the holster to make any configuration you want. Some like the drop offset, I will say the pro shooters I know personally do not like it. They like the same holster same draw for both uspsa production and idpa. Only difference is the pretty little apron you wear for idpa. And as far as idpa???? lift your leg while farting during a reload and you get a procedural nowadays.

Any recommendations for mag carriers for a noob?
Those cheap BladeTech carriers will get you going until you figure out what really works for you.

I was using CR Speed carriers in USPSA but since I also shoot IDPA, I wanted to use similar equipment. My favorite right now that is IDPA legal is the Blade Tech Classic double mag carriers because I can heat up the kydex to tune retention and get the feel just right. They're still not quite as fast as the CR Speed ones though.

I wouldn't recommend investing a ton of $ in your rig at this point. Shaving a few 0.1s off your reloads with expensive mag carriers isn't productive until you get some more experience.
