Went by my local gun store today and checked out a Walther PDP compact 9mm. Seemed good but the mag release was weird. After the sales guy gave it to me, I went to drop the mag and didn't find the release. It didn't stand out from the frame. It seemed almost even.

The sales guy noted that in his opinion, it was almost recessed. Said it was a good pistol but he didn't like the mag release. Has any one noticed this? Is it an issue or something you get used to and then find without thinking about it.

yeah i was over at the walther forum few months ago asking members if they thought walther would be releasing a M1 model aka paddle mag release. looks like walther is dropping the M1 line for good. P99 and PPQ M1 are some of my favorite 9mm's... i prefer the paddles vs the button.
PDP seems to be getting decent reviews... but better than the PPQ? definitely like to test drive one at the range.

I don’t have any issues with the mag release on mine. I have the 4” compact version and I do like it more then my old PPQs. My only regret is not getting the 5” version

I agree about the paddles,
The PDP is really an evolution of the PPQ, It is a very nice pistol especially when equipped with the performance trigger.
As a side note, the P99AS is totally under rated.

the P99AS is a modern marvel for sure... the P99 and G19 are the BEST modern 9mm sidearms made.
the man that designed the P99 was Horst Wesp, former Glock engineer... crazy, huh?
i own the P99AS, P99QA and PPQ M1, i think walther is no longer manufacturing the P99... shame. this weapon was light years ahead of its time!

Hey Mr.H&K ,
just a friendly tech tip, if you wish to lighten the DA pull on the P99AS and QA they will accept Glock OEM striker springs.
I have been running one in P99AS, No issues.
Enjoy!

Sounds like a good reason not to buy it.

Walther decided to appeal to amateurs with their M2 line of pistols made specifically for the US weenie market. They hosed a very good pistol, and made it almost impossible to find the M1 model in the US. It would appear their new mag release was an attempt to make it so you don't have to change grips to change mags.

You should never buy a Walther M2 anything.

And, they have ****ty customer service and cannot get orders right.

There's a ridge of polymer under the trigger guard that wraps around under the mag release button. I dont like it either. Honest Outlaw took a dremel to his and I might do the same. It's the guns only fault in my opinion.

That fence is there to keep the mag release from being accidentally pushed. It’s not a design fault.

If you don’t like it, then by all means, cut that fence off for easier mag release access.

You guys are overreacting.

The bulge that extends from the trigger guard to under the mag release is there to prevent snagging and inadvertent operation; the button itself offers plenty of surface area to operate easily.

I'd post images of my Compact 5" PDP but my image host (imgur) is currently down for maintenance, so below is an internet image that clearly shows the bulge and mag release button, and with the exception of the very bottom of the button, the vast majority of it is exposed to operate:

I don't have any problems whatsoever operating mine, and I'm getting old ;)

I do have a problem with mine. My thumb always hits the ridge/shelf before the button. I'll probably try reversing it first before I get the Dremel out. I like using my strong hand index finger. So, with a bunch of reps it should work for me.

I am hoping that Walther starts selling the PDP slides soon as they are compatible with the PPQ they say. I would not mind trying a 4.5 inch PDP slide on my M1 PPQ if they are reasonably priced. Wather claims they will be around $350 including barrel.
