Wait. New M&P is 250-350 more dollars but has zero enhancements? What is going on?

Hey all.

Is it because it's new or is S&W just screwing everyone over on price?

The new M&P. It adds new style cuts, comes with non super tall sights, flat trigger, and is ported--$650. None of that should cost us more if it's the new version.
Yet, the current optic ready, 3 mags, flat trigger without porting...$380 gun.deals

What am I missing?

Raising the price significantly will doubtless increase sales. Oh, wait.

Most retail products are priced to allow enough room for some discounting.

Let me peg a required sale price for a new gun so it generates the margin I want at $400.

Should I price it at $400?

Or would I be better off if I establish the price at $600 - then offer a $100 rebate or include some accessories like extra magazines during a promotion.

A lot of people will see a $600 gun on sale for $475 as a bargain - but same gun always priced at $425 as not a good deal.

A lot of people also equate price with quality.

I don't know if this is 100% applicable, but if a company is or has upgraded to a new product (any company/any product) it isn't new or novel to offer attractive prices for the older models to flush out remaining inventory.

The "shock" of this thread would mean something to me if M&P 2.0s were all $200 and then offered @ $380 for 1 basic model and $650 for 1 with the most upgrades. And I did note that the illustration did not feature the newest trigger (which is sweeeeet), but the older hinged trigger.

Additionally, when did S&W last have a price increase? With EVERYTHING priced up in the last 2 years, I don’t recall any significant increases. Sooner or later that has to happen, especially in this economy.

Just a couple of thoughts.

It's an election year and they are hoping there will be a panic in the next couple months because everyone knows the Democrats are going to try to STEAL THE ELECTION AGAIN!

Either that or it's just inflation. 🤔

If that $650 is msrp then you will find it considerably cheaper in the stores. At least around these parts. Typically around 85% of the msrp at my LGS. That would make it quite reasonable.

I didn’t know they moved to South Carolina. I know they moved to Maryville TN. Because that’s where the recruiter called me from last week.

You just answered your question...
All those "new" upgrades cost money; I don't think is fair to compare it with the basic model...
Not the same thing at all
I own the 2.0 METAL and is way different than the basic model...now this new model are a significant difference...

If you bought a base gun and sent it off to be reconfigured into something somewhat resembling the comped gun, what would you pay? Would you go that route, or would you just buy the comped gun?

The worth of of the gun is subjective. Op doesn't seem to find it worth it and that's fine. While a comped gun with an optic cut means nothing to me, but would to others. It's up to them to see the worth or not.

My Glock 19 Gen5 MOS was $650. The optics cut was about $100 more than no cut.

Smith is a business and they know people will buy $650 firearms. Especially if it’s a brand new edition with lots of features that the other brand’s don’t have. They’re not here to give you a deal. It’s just business. It’s priced so because it will sell.

If it’s MSRP, it’s probably cheaper in store too. The Bodyguard 2.0 has an MSRP of $450 but sell for $400 in store.

The " previous generation " guns are being blown out , S&W commonly does that .

After the Shield 2.0 came out , on my weekly stop in my LGS , I see a Shield in the case @ $249 .

" Dang Mary , that's a good price on that Shield ( $249) , is it used ? "

" No Biggfoot , now that the 2.0 is out , there's incentives for all the distributors to blow out the Gen 1 . And by the way , today is the last day for the Factory $50 Instant Rebate . "

I knew the Original Shield , and liked it . So I whipped out the cell phone , and called Littlefoot44.

" Come down to Gary's Store , and bring your ( state mandated purchasing stuff ) , and act surprised at Christmas. "

***

The New Improved Product will initially be sold by distributors at pricing , such that LGS will be having to mark at MSRP . Then in a few months after the initial rush , it will be seen at LGS at typical markdown Ratios.

Yah.

Some people are missing that the gun I posted for 380 has 100% the same everything except for style of slide serrations and a ported barrel/slide. Exact same. This new M&P at $750 is not a Performance Center model.

It appears the MSRP of the M&P will be going up.
This really isn't that unusual for S&W. Prices often vary widely on their pistols.

Add to that the fact that everything is getting more expensive. Most Glocks aren't $499 street price anymore either. And that was before the recent skyrocketing of prices on everything.

As for this specific disparity of price, give it time. This new release by S&W will most likely drop substantially over the next 6-12 months. Several sellers are below $750 already. And the $375 model you reference is one seller with a very low price. Most on the list are over $400 and a few are selling that model in the $600s. The exact same range as the new, ported model can also be found at.

I bought my M&P40 2.0 Compact for $299 from one seller while most others had it listed around $500 at the same time.

Smith and Wesson published prices can get pretty high but most seem to pay a lot less. Maybe just because something is new they at first sell for more so the "have to have it" crowd pays more. There certainly is a dizzying amount of M&P models these days. I am very surprised what I still see the original M&P pistol go for used at times. I remember it having one of the worst triggers ever and reports of accuracy problems with certain models. I finally bought an OR Shield Plus and am impressed with it. It's published retail at S&W is $549 but i got it for $349 after rebate.

Smith imposed a minimum advertised price rule. Retailers are required to not advertise their guns below a certain level under threat of being cut off. But they can actually sell the guns for whatever they want. So I you want a particular gun call around and see what the sellers will actually let you have it for.

Shadow systems sells their gen3 Glock clones for much more than Glock does.

Pricing is what the market will bear. They have cow poop for sale on ebay.
The Foundation Series is only about $50 more than a comparable Gen 5 MOS, with the additional features that you would still need to pay more money for on the Glock. And they are more analogous to the Gen4 than the Gen3. The Elites are much more expensive, but again come with the Gucci stuff already built in making it a better value for someone seeking "Glock Perfection".

I don’t like the new fad of calling ported pistols comped. They are not the same and do have a difference on how much they affect recoil and return to zero. I also don’t care for cleaning ported pistols. They get dirty incredibly fast.
