You might be surprised at how little distance you really need to find that high candela makes a big difference. The X300 Turbo is a pistol light and not a rifle light.

If you want to shine through glass, through a lighted room into the dark beyond, past a barrier, or through a doorway threshold at any sort of distance, even just like 30 yards, high lumen and low candela falls off quick.

I was at low light training on Saturday and never once heard "my light is too bright" but there were times where people expressed that their light wasn't enough. Especially during demonstrations with a bright light between us and the target.
The course sounds more offensive than defensive in which your stated goals have more merit. I've only worried about PB when using nods and weak ass civilian illuminators. Never gave it to much thought when using a pistol as a primary.

From a previous thread: level 2 duty type holster

Dara Holsters I think

I have the TLR-8A on my G45 and G19, with lower controls. I have a Surefire X400 on a carbine and from a functionality standpoint the end results are comparable.
What is not comparable (for me) is usability, the lower controls on the TLR are far easier for me to use quickly and effectively than the Surefire.
When I had a Surefire mounted on my Glocks the protruding lens (past barrel) seemed to get a bit dirtier than the flush TLR lens. Finding holsters was a bigger issues 2 years ago than today, but Werkz seems to be the better fit for the TLRs that I have found.
The added laser component seems like a useful addition. With the both types of lights, I store them with the battery's disengaged (off) because I have accidently put them away and discovered the light was triggered when I closed the safe! Takes about 1.5 seconds to re-engage the battery!.
Hope this helps.

I've got seven or eight TLR-1's half are probably the HL. Surefire IMO makes a great light but not twice as great as Streamlight WML's.
Can’t say anything bad about a TLR1. But I have more TRL7 A & Sub since I tend to carry subcompacts and compacts. That said I do like the TLR9

As far as "brightness", while my handguns (those with lights) run TLR-8As, my carbines run the TLR-2HL. Much better solution for shots over 15m. Stream light came out with a sleeker model for carbines too, cannot recall the model number. So far (knock on wood), they have all worked well.
I have a Surefire X300 and a X400 as well that are riding on a couple of AR pistols that seem ok (replaced the battery cover on the 400), but I keep going back to the Streamlights for new purchases.

I have a G20.5 on the way eventually from my prize pistol from the Jacksonville match. I've so far not purchased a weapon mounted light. I have practiced with a handheld and don't believe it is really necessary for CCW in a non-LEO capacity. All that aside, is the light I want on a full size Glock 20 "woods gun" going to be either the SureFire X300 or the TLR1? The TLR7 is for smaller pistols?

I see right today on Academy's website the TLR1 is running $180 and the X300 is $342! I mean we are talking serious holster money there.

These lights seem pretty comparable. The TLR1 is listed as being slightly heavier at 4.32 ounces vs the 4 oz SureFire x300. That seems it might give the nod to the TLR1 as it gives slightly more weight to "compensate" recoil. This difference is probably negligible for recoil on a G20, but worth noting

Which one is the one I am going to want?

I believe that given the current trade climate the prices on either or both is about to jump way up. Which is in part why I am thinking about buying now while I can even before the new pistol arrives.
Streamlight. I own multiple tlr1 hl, and tlr7a's. Never had any issues and always reliable.

Crucial Concealment makes a universal iwb holster for wmls.
You can use it with pretty much any gun as long as you have your wml of choice mounted on it.
I use mine with a g19 and a full rail 1911.

The TLR1-HL arrived last night. I put the batteries in and tested it out. It seems sufficiently very bright. The switch seems fairly intuitive with a thumb forward grip. The only thing holding me back from carrying it really is holster selection. I don't want to buy something that just works for the G17/47 and not the thicker G20 when it arrives. If I had to choose, I would want a G20 holster since it makes a lot of sense for this light to live on that pistol long term.

My wife already gave me a little bit of grief about the purchase last night. But I see it as future proofing a capability.

A WML is certainly a niche tool in my context. However, if I am ever camping and need to target identify a bear threat then I have an option. I never leave home at night without a hand held flashlight.

I'm a huge fan of Black Point Tactical's holsters particularly because I like the metal beltloops and leather wings. It makes for a smooth contour across my waistline. That being said they should cater to your TLR-1 HL on the Glock 20. Good choice on the light btw. I don't even mention my new purchases to my wife anymore particularly because I'm at the point in volume of gear that it all kinda blends in that one wouldn't notice. Lol

I've liked the holsters that use leather wings for a more flexible fit to the waistline

I found some time to do some presentation practice in the basement dry fire with the TLR-1. I like it! It seems to work well and is easy to activate.

I am puzzled by some of the commentary I have read over the years of the safety hazard of this tool since finger is no where near the trigger guard when activating the light. Is it mostly just about people using the light when they I know the world of people who carry guns and law enforcement is a very large and diverse group. I feel that I have it buried deep in my soul that I don't want the pistol out of my holster unless it is truly go time.

Anyway, I think this is a good tool to have in the tool box long term. I could see carrying it with a G17 not just the forthcoming G20. I don't know if adventure camping will ever be in my future, given my family since my wife is not interested in such things, but it will be nice to know if I ever had to positively identify a bear threat in the middle of the night with no lights I have an option.

I still am on the holster hunt. It would be nice if the G20 holster could also work for the G17. I know this is a niche setup.

I have never understood the concerns regarding the lights mounted either, but I think training is the critical difference. I suspect target shooting is the primary practice for many persons, and drawing the weapon and firing it (safely) is less practiced. Competition tends to be a great form of feedback!
G20 is slightly thicker than G17, not too sure how many holsters (kydex) would accommodate that difference given most are friction fit/retention oriented - but it could be possible.
My holsters for guns with lights is Safariland, or Werkz for Kydex, Milt Sparks, Mitch Rosen or Galco for leather (although I have a couple Kirkpatricks).
Glad you like the light!

Guns are hazardous. So is driving cars and flying airplanes. Absence is the only safe and effect cure for stupid that I know of. Some people really struggle navigating the world. If you're capable and confident then go for it.
