I’m trying to figure out the side by side rifle Spencer uses in Africa...and the caliber .
I believe it is a Holland & Holland but no clue on caliber.
Without seeing the makers name, it’d be hard to tell.

H&H is the biggest name, but it could be from a dozen companies and/or cross marked.

After a good freeze, I think we can rule out H&H based on the action.

Looks like it’s a Chapuis (French) double. Which makes sense because early in the episode you can see a nub left from regulation between the barrels which is a Chapuis thing.

No idea on caliber, but likely would a 470-500 rifle. In the first episode it looked like it might be a 450-400

Pretty sure this is the gun used.

Definitively not an H&H though.

I think he uses a lighter rifle or even a 410 for the lion scene. The barrel diameter at the breech seems much larger in the leopard scenes.
Possibly, but I don’t think so. It appears to be the same gun in all 3 episodes

Clearly see the fences on the action

Clearly see the nub from regulation left on the end of the barrel.

I also think the Thompson is not a Colt as listed in IMFDB but a West Hurley judging by the block wood and quality of.

I just watched the latest 1923 series episode and wanted to discuss its firearm use without giving any spoilers.

What is great about the time period and the use of the firearms in the seties to me is how it shows the change in firearm use.
We have characters using double barrel shotguns and single action revolvers and other characters who are using a 1911, and a Tommy gun.
It reminds me of a lot of the same things going on today haven’t changed
Older people tend to stick with what we know while a few are willing to use the new tech.
I do not know if any of the characters who were using revolvers were using a double action revolver. I wasn’t looking that closely.
Would I carry a 1911 as my primary protection as opposed to a double action revolver or even a single action revolver if I were one of the characters? I think it would have depended on when such technology was introduced to me. If I was one of the older characters, I probably would have stuck with worked just fine in the past or moved up to a double action revolver. It also doesn’t have to be cocked and locked if I was jumped and had to shoot while struggling with someone.
I also enjoyed seeing how “ in town” that open carry was common .
The rifle Spencer uses in Africa is a .577 Holland and Holland Royal Double Rifle. DOPE!
Not an animal on the planet that can weather that storm!

The bores and the gun itself doesn’t look big enough. I use to shoot with a guy that hunted lions and he used a double rifle that if I remember correctly was a .450 or a .470 Nitro . The rounds looked like brass torpedoes. Anyway the rifle was surprisingly light and handy for such a round . Kind of reminded me of a 20 gage side by side but with rifle sights .
.577 Holland and Holland Royal Double Rifle is what Spencer was using. Straight man held Howitzer!
I’d think a 20 gauge would be way too light.

It’s not H&H, it’s a Rizzini, wrong action. and it’s either a 470 or a 500

When Spencer gets back to Montana, that gnarly Irishman id going to have some problems.
Maybe he'll blow a few of them off of their horses with that big twice pipe !
I hope so, they don’t realize that hell has been summoned.

So great when the Irishman says “I met your nephew, I wasn’t too impressed” and she replies “not that one”.

She’s such a badass too!

“Your fight is with me, and I kill much slower”.

If anyone saw Helen Mirren in R.E.D.( Retired, extremely dangerous), they would know that-lol. The set armorer talks in interviews how she doesn’t flinch or blink when she shoots machine guns.

I think this is a fantastic thread and I’ve never even seen the shows in question!

You're missing out. So far 1923 is the best of the Yellowstone series.

That’s one thing that impresses me about the series, the period correct weapons. Looks like Jake Dutton (Harrison Ford’s character)is using a Smith M&P.
