I live out in the country and have the luxury of being able to shoot my guns a few steps from my house. It's a pretty sweet gig. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy going to an actual indoor range from time-to-time (especially in January), but there's something to be said for having some friends over and leisurely turning money into noise over the course of an afternoon.

My "range" (and I use that term loosely) is little more than a corner of my side yard with a small bench and homemade target stand that can accommodate a silhouette target and several steel targets. I have painted lines on the ground denoting various distances (10, 20, 30, 50, and 100 yards).

I was just wondering how many others are in a similar situation.

Luckily I can shoot in my backyard. I have a few steel targets, that's about it but it works.

When I was a kid, my neighbor’s father decided to set up hid own range in his backyard … in a subdivision. When the police showed up and asked him what he thought he was doing, he replied “none of your business”. From what I remember, the police were way more cordial and understanding than they could have been. Maybe they cut him some slack since he was a WWII vet.

I do. It's 140-yards long over very flat grass that is mowed. Plenty of swinging AR500 plates from 5" to 15" Political campaign signs to staple paper targets on. Some .22 rimfire swingers and resetting steel tombstones. Tote my shooting stuff out from my garage to firing line about 50-yards away with a hand pulled wagon.

Right outside my shop, I just roll up the door, hangun ranges, only, I live in the forest, so too many trees for rifle distance's, , It's a great life..

I think that quite a few of us here own our own ranges....Ours is not at the house, but out at our ranch property a short distance away; it's a bit more elaborate that some, 100 yards, with a nice 3-sided berm, 4x4 painted yardage markers at 7, 15, 25, 50, and 100 yards, and a shed that holds all of the targets, steel, and various props for drills- a car door and a car seat, a doorway with a door, a couple of v-tac walls, and a bunch of other stuff.... The range has electricity, and there are lights from the 25 yard line in.....we use it for smaller pistol classes and private instruction, and I use it as my private range.

My son and I were just out there today; he bought a new defensive shotgun, and I was doing my twice-weekly shooting drills....good times.

I have 23 acres in the Ozarks, with the driveway next to a hill about 50 feet high. Makes a great natural berm. Several steel targets from 7 to about 32 yards. When I shoot bolt guns I park my truck in my bottom pasture and prone out on a rug in the bed..can go from 50 to 235 yards. So glad I retired to the country.

I can shoot at my mother's place, 20 minutes down the road. I'm building a backstop, nothing fancy, but I love being able to shoot by myself and take my time. It's especially nice when it's time to test my reloads or practice drawing, moving while shooting, whatever I want. I realize it's a luxury that many shooters do not have.
