The CTAC and MTAC are similar, but different.....

Anyone care to share their experience or comments on the respective merits of these two IWB rigs?

Thanks

I've never owned the CTAC but I do have the MTAC and I love it. I bought the MTAC and the Crossbreed but ended up selling the Crossbreed.

I have both. The CTAC is all Kydex, and my own experience is that you need some kind of buffer between it and your skin. (Tee shirt, wife beater etc.)
All in all an excellent holster. Now the MTAC....that is a GREAT holster!!!
It has a leather "back plate" semi soft and pliable. I still use a tank under most of the time, but my 21sf just.......I dunno, call it disappears in it. That and a good gun belt and I'm in hog heaven. You can also buy extra bodies for say a 19 and use the same backer! I've had others, Galco, Safariland, and a couple of others, but the MTAC is IT for me!!! As always YMMV! But like I said my 21sf as big as it is disappears, both figuratively and literally. Even with a polo as cover. Jope this helps.

Yeah, if you're debating between the two, IMO, it's a no brainer to get the M-Tac. I have a few C-Tac's, that don't really get used anymore, but they are great holsters.

Vartarg,

I have the M-tac, and no experience with the C-tac. From my experience the M-tac is very comfy for sure. Additionally, I liked the ability to change the bodies of the holster to accommodate different firearms. Not sure if the C-tac allows that interchangeability. Good holster for the $.

On a different note, I do have one gripe with Comp-tac not related to the M-tac holster.

I have purchased 3 of their paddle holsters in the past and had given to family members for gifts. I also would use one of them for range use as well.

Well, one day after a range session I was entering my vehicle and it snagged the seat upon entry and snapped/broke at the top of the holster where it straddles your beltline and pants. The holster was rendered useless instantly. :steamed:

So on a whim, I gave a phone call to the customer service crew at Comp-Tac to see if it may possibly be a warranty issue?? And I was basically told "too bad so sad" more or less.

Her: "I see you ordered the holster more than 30 days ago so you are out of luck."

Me: "Ok really? That sucks." :crying:

Its funny, I wasn't looking for a free holster. But, when that gal basically told me to pound sand I figured ok, I won't be sending them my business nor my friend's business anymore.

It was her patronizing tone and yeah I know people have a crappy day sometimes but don't crap on the customer mid stride. :tongueout:

Sour grapes sure.. But there are certain manufacturers of kydex holsters that offer unconditional lifetime warranties on their products for guys that actually use their stuff and sometimes have unforeseen accidents.

I have the M-Tac and I can say it's the most comfortable IWB holster I've ever tried. I've had the all kydex IWB's, and it's just not as comfortable. If the price is a concern (and it was for me, but I splurged) then they make a version that only has the one piece of leather like the Crossbreed for about 20 cheaper.

Sorry to hear of your poor experience with the cs rep. I had a similar experience and wrote a lengthy email to them explaining my dissatisfaction. The general manager wrote me back apologizing and expressing his gratitude for my sharing my views. I sent my gear back and they fixed the issue promptly.

OP

I own two MTAC holsters and I really like them.

Same with me. I broke on of the clips on my MTAC. I emailed them and told them it was my fault and they still sent me out two new ones free of charge.

Hi,

Wow, CTAC taking a beating here! :) My first holster was a CTAC and I really liked it from day 1. When I changed to a different pistol I order the CTAC and MTAC to try them both and keep the one I preferred. Maybe I'm set in my ways, but the MTAC was much more bulky for me which is why I returned it. Maybe I'm not sensitive, but the CTAC never irritates me and I don't wear an undershirt or use moleskin, etc. I'm a CTAC fan!!

Good luck,

Alan

Two excellent holsters. The CTAC's main advantage over the MTAC is that reholstering is easier as the entire scabbard is rigid. That said today I use the MTAC only, because it is superior in most other aspects.

I have both for different guns and there is a big comfort difference between the two, the MTAC is much more comfortable but is a little bulkier and like Lior said, does not reholster nearly as well as the CTAC. I've used my CTAC in IDPA and not had a problem drawing and reholstering 20 times during the match. I've managed to nap with either of them on, multiple times each. If I was buying one to wear all the time I'd go with the MTAC again, I probably wouldn't have bought the CTAC at all if the MTAC had been out then.

I have a CTAC for my G26. I used it daily for a few years. I have an MTAC for my G19, I used it daily for two years.

CTAC advantage: Better retention of the gun, especially when it is not on a belt. This isn't real retention as in the kind of thing you put on a holster that will be carried openly, just friction/indent retention, but the CTAC will pass the test where you hold the holstered and loaded (magazine at least) gun upside down, shake the holster a little, and the gun does not come out. This is reassuring, especially if you keep the gun somewhere when you are not carrying it...like a nightstand or coffee table or whatnot. It also seems to make for a more consistent draw.

MTAC advantage: The leather backing is more comfortable against bare skin than the kydex of the CTAC. It isn't a big deal and it shouldn't bother you. It didn't bother me at all. But I did notice it when I switched back from the MTAC. I also find that the leather backing allows the holster to slide along your body just a little bit when you move around where the CTAC's kydex, with it's higher friction, tends to want to stick to your skin just a wee bit.

They both work quite well.

A little update and a little clarity. I had written before that they would not honor the warranty after 30 days, I was wrong, the warranty exists for a year.

So I decided to write a lengthy email again to plead my case once more, after numerous back and forth emails with CS I arrived at the same conclusion. No comp-tac for me ever again.

However, I do think that the M-tac is one of the most comfortable IWB holsters available and I think you will enjoy it if you decide to get one.

I just hope that none of you need to have a warranty claim after a year of use.

I have an MTAC for my G23 and I love it! My only complaint is that they changed the design of the leather backing and now that I want to order a new kydex piece for a different gun, I have to re-order the leather...it's really no big deal.
You're talking about the Gen 1 vs Gen 2 leather backing. The only changes were they made the sweat guard a little larger and moved the mounting holes. Why they had to move the mounting holes is beyond me. Smacks of "planned obsolescence" to me.

I know some holster makes have a lifetime warranty but frankly one year on a holster is pretty darn good considering how much use and abuse they may receive.
