Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew of any places near Bloomington to go shoot. I'm looking for places closer than Indy if there are any. Thanks in advance for any spots

Sub-P and NateIU10,

If you want to look around the club, your best opportunity would be before the club's monthly meeting this thursday (6th) at 7 pm. I'll be there at the meeting.

Martinsville is a great place to shoot, I was a member last year and used it a lot. I could not afford the price increase this year, and might not have been able even if it had not gone up. But I love the ranges and hope to rejoin next year. There is nothing in Bloomington indoor or outdoor that I'm aware of and boy have I looked. Your only option is some areas in the woods if you find a good spot, but the ones I found are so far out it is just as fast to go to Martinsville!

South of Bloomington you can shoot in the Hoosier National Forest. Just be sure you aren't in the Charles C. Deam Wilderness or on someone's property. That's where I go (for 2 years now) and it has been fantastic!

Yeah, today was awesome, 71 and sunny. About the Hoosier National Forest, are there specific places where people shoot? and do you just go out set up a target and shoot? Sorry, but I've never heard about doing this before

Yep, there are a few places that I have seen mucho evidence of shooting going on, but the place I go is almost NEVER occupied. I can tell that some people use it for shotguns and bonfires (and beer drinking) but thats it. I haven't run into anyone out there for about a year.

Are you an IU student?

You CAN shoot in the Hoosier National Forest.
You CAN'T shoot in the Charles C. Deam Wilderness area portion.
-Just get a map and check out the boundaries.
-Also, try and pick a place far from homes and farms and the like...

Thanks for the info I'll definitely have to check it out. I noticed you were in the Marines at Twentynine Palms (from your AIM name). My girlfriend just had a friend from high school die in Iraq who was stationed there, his name is Drew Weaver, happen to know him?

Nope, I didn't know him.

While it is a small base, there are still thousands of guys there. Also, I have been out since summer of 2004.

Oh, and Marines don't die. We just change duty stations. He is guarding the pearly gates of heaven as we "speak". ;)

Yeah, was just wondering. And thank you, for everything you and our Marines do.

On another note, do you just pull off the road on either side, set up a target and have at it? Sorry about all the questions, but I just don't wanna get into any trouble over there :)

Well, it's no problem.

You see in the map the little pull off that looks like the start of a road?
We park there, then walk into the woods like 100 meters, set up targets against a tree stump, facing a hill, then blast away.

If you walk back there you will likely see spent brass on the ground. Use good judgment and you'll be fine.

I think I'm heading out there tomorrow actually.

well, i don't know about that. I checked the boundaries that they set with GPS. I'm nearly certain that we are outside the Deam boundary. As for other spots... just look around. It is a big forest, and I'm sure there are other spots that are not near someone's land that could be used for target practice. You just have to be willing to drive around a lot until you find a suitable spot.

As a side note, I have been shooting at that spot for 2 years, almost every other weekend, and have had NO issues.

I don't think there is any oversight in the HNF at all. I have never even seen a Forest Service vehicle except while visiting Brown County State Park ( and that was at the main entrance!)
