Science is the surface area in and between the tines keep the powder burning in that area instead of being pushed out for a big muzzle flash. The tines create mini vortexes and voids

I never gave it much thought until my AR's came out for a inspection and relube. All my others have the standard A2. The square flange looks as if it may accept an accessory, maybe a barrel mounted QD system.

Noveske called it a Q Cherry Bomb Flash Hider.
It seems odd that they would call it a Q Cherry Bomb Flash Hider. Are you sure you have that right? It doesn't look anything like a Cherry Bomb quick attach system. The link you added even says it's for Saker suppressors. You can see the tines are of different length. That prevents the pinging noise (tuning fork) you get from some 3 prong flash hiders.

Beats me. Here is a copy and paste from Midwayusa when I bought it 5yrs ago.

"This Noveske Light Recce Basic AR-15 Upper Assembly is chambered in 5.56mm and comes fully assembled and ready to drop onto any standard AR-15 lower receiver. It comes equipped with a 16" cold hammer forged barrel featuring 1 in 7" twist rifling, M4 feed ramps, 1/2"-28 muzzle threads, and a matte black manganese phosphate finish. Additional features include a Noveske-marked BCM Gunfighter charging handle, an F-marked fixed front sight base/gas block, M4-style polymer handguard and a shot-peened, MP-tested bolt housed within a Mil-Spec bolt carrier. The Noveske Marked Q Cherry Bomb Flash Hider Flash Suppressor installed at the muzzle does more than simply reduce the enlarged flash signature produced by the 16" barrel, it comes shot-peened, and MP-tested bolt housed within a Mil-Spec bolt carrier"

At least you answered my question on the 3-prong pinging issue.

It's probably an old description or something. If you google the Q Cherry Bomb you'll see how different it looks.

Noveske made these for SilencerCo.

The tines are of different lengths to stop the tuning fork-like ring associated with prong flash hiders.

The different lengths result in different masses for each tine, preventing the resonance required to ring.

Dead Air prong flash hiders do something similar, keeping the tines all the same length but shaving a different amount of metal off the outside of each tine to keep the masses different.
