I found some new 10mm (at least to me) on the shelf at the LGS this morning. By Fort Scott Munitions....190 gr. solid copper flat nose. No mention on the box or their website on how fast they're running. I'm gonna hit the range in a couple of days to see how they shoot, and run them over the chrono to see how fast they're going.

According to their website:
COAL : 1.255"

POWDER : POWER PISTOL

POWDER WEIGHT : 13GR

TEST BARREL LENGTH / TWIST : 5.25" 1:16"

VELOCITY : 1094 FPS

  • Multi-Patented, Tumble Upon Impact® design
  • Superior penetration
  • Non lead, Solid Copper Spun SCS® bullet

Fort Scott Munitions® presents the 10MM with our advanced Tumble Upon Impact® (TUI®) design, offering superior performance and reliability. This multi-patented ammunition features a solid copper spun SCS® bullet,

According to their website:

My guess is that Power pistol is too fast burning to get anymore than 1094 fps out of a 190 grain bullet

I'm also dubious of this claim:
"Multi-Patented, Tumble Upon Impact® design" --You aren't going to get a lot of penetration out of that especially if the factory velocity is below 1200 fps.

Or if it tumbles.

Fort Scott is now making ammo using two different projectiles. Their original offering is the Tumble Upon Impact. The newer offering is the Claw Defense which is what I found. In 10mm both are 190 gr. solid copper, but are different designs. The Claw Defense is a flat nose solid which appears to be designed for penetration, not tumbling like their originals. Their website specifically says, "Claw Defense Ammunition - Solid Copper Flat Nose Penetrator for Bear and Big Game Defense.". The box I bought has no data of any sort on it other than the bullet weight.

They probably updated their boxes since then. The box on the website says 1094.

a 190 grain solid copper projectile at 1094 feet per second is NOT going to be much of a penetrator when compared to an Underwood 200 grain flatnose hardcast polymer coated lead bullet at almost 200 fps MORE velocity (1250 feet per second) --More velocity, more penetration.

Neither of these loads, either the Tumbling Claw, or the relatively low velocity "Penetrator" would be my choice for defending my life against large dangerous creatures at the top of the food chain OR for use against Feral Recidivist Humanoid Urban Dwellers

Fort scott seems to be trying to find a niche in the ammo market. Rounds designed to tumble dont penetrate as much. A pointed solid doesnt crush tissue, just shoves it aside. Plus its not cheap. The xtp is a very good choice to do both. The UW penetrator line will at least crush tissue, though also not cheap.

I assume if I ever am going to have to shoot someone in self defense that I am going to get sued. I'd like to keep things simple for my lawyer and use conventional ammunition. For playing around in the field, sure, that's fun.

10mm aluminum CCI blazer 200 grain clocks about 1050fps. And it's a LOT cheaper. Not sure what their marketing plan is here. Not really a fan of solid copper either. I only use it in my hunting rifles because accuracy has been better than any jacketed, lead-based hunting bullet I've tried.
At least make it interesting & put a Lehigh bullet in it?

I remember when handguns and handgun ammo were intended to stop bad guys now they all have to stop bears and big foot!. There is even a guy in Alaska that loads with silver bullets to kill vampires. 🤣

Have some respect for mythical creatures!

It's spelled Bigfoot...

And silver bullets are for Werewolves (according to Hollywood). UV bullets are for vampires.

Jeez, everyone knows this stuff.
