Both the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 probably have the most aftermarket tactical modifications / accessories available . The new Remington 870 Fieldmaster pump by new owners RemArms appears to have upped the quality , smoothness and reliability of the former Remington 870 Express . Not much to say new regarding the Mossberg 500 pump as it remains a solid , reliable choice as ever . Which would you choose as a HD project gun for HD and why ?

I recommend the 870. I own the 500 & 870. If you like thumb selector safety, go with the 500. Ive been hunting small game most of my life, and the push safety with Remington is better because its more natural chasing pheasants, grouse, and rabbits.

they both are 100% reliable (after some 500 work) easy to strip and clean, and now with RemArms back - parts are available. I did have to send my 500 back to the factory, turn around was quick, and CS was outstanding. So you can’t go wrong, it comes down to what do you like for safety selection.

I have both in 12 ga, and from a purely functional perspective, I have never had a moment's problems with either one. Safety location is a good consideration. I would give a slight edge to the 870, only because I see a lot more furniture options for it over the years.

Bought my 500 at a gun show. It was at the bottom of a pile of ex- security company riot guns.
Take your pick, $75, said the sign.
It started as a sporting shotgun, cut down by the former owners to 18".
Over the years, it has been pretty faultless. Well used, it is as smooth as can be.
The only problem I ever had... The ejector screw loosened, causing failure to eject. A little loktite and a screwdriver fixed that.
Last year, I found a 20" barrel, long mag cheap. Later, I found a deal on a Magpul stock set.

I previously owned a Remington 11-87 and had no issues with the safety or its location . I like how the Remingtons come up to my shoulder and point . The all steel receiver of the 870 is a plus and if the pump racking action is smoother on the new Field Masters - that would be a plus . Based on comments , I should be comparing the 870 to a 590 and in a complete opposite direction - The Maverick 88 security / field combo has a great price for upgrading .

For home defense purposes save yourself the trouble and grab a 590a1.

You can get them for cheaper if you look around a bit. I picked one up for $525 out the door. Has mlok forend, drilled and tapped receiver, 6+1 capacity, metal trigger guard and safety. Only disadvantage is it is difficult to find field barrels for it.

This Mossberg 590A1 tactical M-Lok model would check most boxes I would have (I must have over looked this model !) ... I could see maybe adding a different recoil pad + spacers for custom fit and maybe the forend grip (only if I had issues with how the grip feels / functions in my hand . Boy , for a standalone , tactical HD shotgun - this M590a1 sure does check a lot of boxes and the price is better than expected - thanks for sharing !

P.S. What threw me off is that Mossberg specifies this as a 7 shot (6 + 1) while a lot of sites list it as a 6 shot ... *I believe they are one and the same ? : 590A1 – 7-Shot .
