You shoot what suits you, and if you're smart you'll choose a weapon that's also suited to the type of shooting you intend to do. There is no one perfect firearm. People are different, weapons are different, scenarios are different.

I will throw in a few of my thoughts on the SHTF situation.

1. 400 yards is a long long way. I live like 20 minutes from town out in the sticks, and I cant see 400 yards in any direction from my place. I would be thinking 200 yards and under for 99.9% of the altercations your going to encounter.

2. The M1 and the M14 are great rifles, but they are very heavy. I dont care how strong you are, if your not used to carrying one with ammo to feed it I think your in for a big surprise. Check it out. Get an M1 in your hands and put just 100 rounds of ammo on your person. Then try it with a 5.56 rifle.

3. I would make sure I had one shotgun for such situations. Its easy to shoot birds, small animals on the run, etc with a shotgun. It is probably more important than your defensive rifle. Get a light single shot 12ga if nothing else.
Well said. Makes sense on all counts.

By the way I feel obligated to say that I concentrated on my AR stuff AFTER I had;
A good supply of food stuffs, researched a good place to go if my family had to
A good 30/30, with a good scope, some ammo (if you haven't looked, you'll be suprised how affordable ammo is)
A good .22 with a good scope, plenty of ammo'
A good cross-bow with RDS, plenty of bolts and broadheads

Huge ol' Bump-ski, ... :popcorn:
