Home defense 590a: bead vs ghost ring

Hey guys,

Ever since I shot my buddies benelli m4 I have been wanting a shotgun for home defense. Unfortunately the m4 is outside my price range so I have pretty much decided on a 590a1 from mossberg. My buddies m4 had ghost ring sights and it was very easy to get hits at 15 to 20 yards.

I have only ever used bead sights when I was in college and this was before I really knew what I was doing. I remember struggling to hit clays but I wasn't given any advice on proper sight alignment at the time.

I plan on running a light on the gun so I am curious which sighting system you guys prefer and why?

Also, the xs big dot sight seems like a good middle ground and an easy install on a bead sight. Do any of you have experience with it?

Thanks in advance

I think the bead would be sufficient for HD. Plus it will be less expensive, more robust, and less likely to snag on something, but that may only be a detriment depending on where you keep it. The bead is plenty accurate shooting at least to 15 yards and especially at ranges required for HD. I doubt you take the time to line up the ghost ring is an actual shooting situation as it will likely be dark or at least dim light and you'll likely be point shooting anyway.

I like ghost ring sights, My issued 14" 870 had them and they worked really well.

If you find a 590 with ghost ring sights at a price that works for you get it.

My home defense Mossberg 500 has a bead sight. While I would like to install a ghost ring sight I can't justify the expense. I put a Hi-Viz fiber optic lines up with the bead sight, It draws the eye and works. Incredible value for $15.

A bead sight helps makes quicker shots when used primarily as point of reference, not aiming. It takes practice for it become natural between your cheek weld and how position the butt to your shoulder. Ghost rings will likely be more accurate at distance shooting. You should be able to achieve about the same accuracy, once you get proficient using the bead.

I always prefer rifle or ghost ring sights to beads. Makes the gun a lot more versatile if you ever want to shoot slugs at any range to speak of. I’d pick rifle sights first, then ghost ring, and bead would be a distant last. You can be plenty fast with real sights, they’re not detrimental in the least.

Thanks for all the advice guys, in a few months when I am actually ready to buy I am gonna try and get the Ghost rings. If I can only find the bead in stock then that's what I'll go with.

I am having trouble deciding between the 18.5in and 20in. Ideally I like the magpul furniture one the best other then it being the 20inch, that one comes with the Ghost ring which is my first choice as I feel it would be more natural since I'm use to rifle and pistol. I feel like since it's for home defense shorter would be better but you give up 1 round of capacity with the 18.5 and if I go with an 18.5 and want the magpul furniture I'll have to buy it separately. I think the length of pull with the magpul furniture is a little shorter anyway and is an inch and a half really gonna make a big difference in maneuverability? What do you guys think?

Thanks again

When you're ready to buy take a loot at gun.deals.

Also, I've only purchased one gun from Centerfire Systems but it has gone super-smooth. They shipped the day I ordered as well. They list a 590 20" with heatshield and ghost rings for $494. (Out of stock right now).

Hope this is helpful.

Be safe!

Probably not very far, the gun will be bought with the purpose of home defense but I'll be practicing at the range probably anywhere from 10 to 30 yards, whatever the max distance for Buckshot would be is what I'd like to practice at least from time to time. I like to push myself on handgun out to 50 yards and beyond sometimes.

You're basically looking for what I have now. My 18.5" 590A1 has a ghost ring sight and Magpul furniture with an InForce light. I didn't buy it that way though. It had a bead and the standard stock.

I didn't like the bead at all. It sits too low. It's difficult to get low enough on the stock to shoot so I ended up hitting very high. I read afterwards that some police are trained to aim low to make center of mass shots. There's a nickname for it I can't remember. So I installed a ghost ring, which I greatly prefer. For longer shots it's more accurate. But for quick, close in shots it's just as fast as a bead because you just ignore the ring.

I also didn't like the standard stock. I actually thought the shotgun kicked like a mule. Then I read others mention that a shorter LOP helped because a longer stock makes you stand more bladed. I bought a Hogue 12" LOP stock, was able to get behind the gun more, and recoil was much more controllable.

I bought the Magpul forend so I could install a light, and it works very well with an InForce light. A few years later I installed a Magpul stock more out of boredom than anything. I do like the grip angle, but there was nothing wrong with the Hogue stock.

So that's my long way of saying buy the model with ghost ring sight and Magpul furniture if available. Save yourself the trouble of changing things out the way I did. I do have an extended safety as well, but it's not really necessary.

I started with a Mossberg 500 18” 5+1 with a bead sight. Put the bead on the target, adjust until you see no barrel below the bead. It comes naturally with practice.I added a GG&P picatinny rail to the front of the mag tube and mounted a Streamlight.

i also bought by pure luck a 20” 590 9-Shot Magpul with Ghost ring sights. This one is better balanced, takes a light and QD tactical sling with magpul connectors and has the AccuChoke system, so I can use it with slugs for distance and doves if I want.

I think the bead is faster and Ghost Ring more accurate, but either will do for indoor defense.

Is yours different then the 590a1 magpul? I didn't think any of the 590a1s where choke compatible?

I have the M500, and added the hiviz clamp on sight over the bead. Yes its inexpensive, work well for basic HD, or short range hunting.
I also changed to the magpul rear stock, liked the drop down hand grip, and added the magpul sling hardware,
My forend is basic fiberglass, added the Mossberg strap to allow a one hand reload. A clip on mini rail holds my Streamlight weapon light on mag tube. I could remove the light an add it to my Glock19 if desired.
Side saddle holds 6 spare rounds of mixed anti felon, repel boarders, ammo. Done and done. I clean and oil the pushbars, and action with breakfree, and its a smooth operator. No issues.

we had to qualify with slugs with just the bead back in the day with no problem out to 75 yards. A lot of poor slug hunters shoot deer all the time with just a bead. Not my choice but you can hit a torso easy. Bead is quick to pick up , ghost ring would be more precise with slugs farther out

I take my ghost ring equipped 590 out to the gravel pit once in a while and bust clays with it using light trap loads....don't even look for the sights, just the flying clay. Do pretty good with it and even get most doubles.

The sights come in handy with slugs at longer ranges on stationary targets.

I tried the 930 SPX but settled for a 590A1 because it has dual extractors and Ghost Ring Sights.

With Federal Truball Slugs I can hit a full size IPSC target at >100 yards. With Winchester Olin Military Brown Box 00 Buck I can hit 50% pellet hits at >40 yards.

Buy a few shotgun cards from SKD and you will be set up. BTW, the shotgun cards with most 2 3/4 shells will fit in your AR mag pouches.
