Help me decide: Ruger .44 Mag, or 1911 .45?

So once again, I'm in a dilemma, in big part because of this damn state. The short of it: there's a measure that's in court, and a ruling is supposed to be out probably around Thanksgiving. If the judge finds in our favor (likely), then it will get appealed to the State Supreme Court, which will find in favor of the state, and that means no more gun sales in Oregon without a permit, which you can't get for a host of reasons. How long it takes to get appealed is anyone's guess, and there's not even a guarantee that the Judge will find in our favor. But it's looking likely.

I've got my bills paid, and I've got a gun budget for the month. Preferably, I don't want to go above $700.....that leaves me enough money for any unforeseen things that might come up. $800 is pushing it, but doable.

I REALLY want two guns, but I can't afford both right now with my current budget. In no particular order, I want either a new Colt 1911 Government Model, either a Competition Series, or a Classic Series. Or a Ruger New Super Blackhawk 7.5" in .44 Mag. Those are my two immediate wants. No reasons other than wants and for plinking purposes. And yes, I can afford the .44 mag ammo for how often I shoot. No, I do not reload, nor do I have the facilities to do it, nor the desire to learn how, thanks.

My backup plan was to just settle for a TISAS for $300-$400, and MAYBE throw in a Ruger 10/22 as well. Which is fine because I wanted a TISAS anyways, but I would prefer the Colt. That way I save money to add to next month's gun budget, if this measure doesn't go through. Or, perhaps get a Springfield Armory Garrison, but I'm not a fan of the logos on the slides. Not a huge deal breaker, but slightly annoying nonetheless.

So what should I do? No other gun suggestions please, I've got the ones I want for now. But these ones escape me so far.

Thanks folks.

Colt 1911, either the classic or the competition if your able.
Yep. …. If it’s got to be a 1911, get the original. Hint: it’s the one with the Pony on it.

Admittedly, it’s a low capacity boat-anchor compared to a Glock, but a Colt 1911 exudes style and classic lines.

A quality 1911. Because every American Pistolero should have one. Owned this Mk IV/Series ‘70 since 1974...🇺🇸

Purchased the Para-Ord 10-45 in 2009. My first dedicated CCW. Lotsa power in a small package.

Good luck with that evil and unconstitutional Oregon Measure 114. I’ve followed the decision closely.

The Harney County Judge will most likely rule against it. As you know, it’s a very Conservative region. At least the licensing requirements. Ten round capacity might be the proffered trade-off. Although I certainly hope it’s all pitched into the rubbish bin.

You can get a lot more gun for the money from Springfield Armory.
And what do the use their money for?
I won't buy anything from SA no matter what the price is.

I have a 44 lever action and a Colt Gov't 1911 45acp.

I also have a 357 lever action and a Gp100 6" in 357.

I tell you all that to tell you this: I also want(ed) a 44 mag revolver to compliment my 44 lever action like my 357 duo, but I feel more than adequate with 357 in a wheel gun. Honestly, I don't want much more than that as far as power and recoil from a handgun. Not that I NEED my guns to be enjoyable to shoot, but I should at least WANT to go shoot them. The 6" 357 is right at that threshold for me wanting to go shoot it from time to time.
On the extreme, I had a S&W PC 500 with the 10.5" barrel. Beautiful piece that got all the attention at the range and when showing guests at my house. But I dreaded just thinking about shooting it. The last straw for me with that gun was one time a chunk of burning powder escaped from between the cylinder and the chamber, hit my cheek and left a scar. No more 500 and no more BIG wheel guns for me. I think the 44 mag has fallen off my "want list."

As I said, I have a 1911 and cannot say enough good things about shooting a 1911. Get one if you don't have one. In 45 ACP of course. A colt is a good starting point too IMO. Afterall, ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol

Well….he lives in Oregon.
Looking to the future, a single action revolver is probably the last thing the Dems will grab.

But yes, a good 1911 is as good as it gets, so that’s my vote now.
Don’t think a Colt CG can be had for his budget.
However my Rock .38 Super has been flawless for 5 years….but, it is one ugly piece. They didn’t even finish machining the ejection port!

Bottom line-if you can find a Colt within budget, buy it. If not, RIA.

Oh, BTW, If I lived in Oregon and couldn’t move out-I’d buy a Blackhawk .357/9mm.

The 2 options are very different - so ultimately the best choice for you depends upon your needs / preferences. I had a Ruger SRH in .44mag with a 9.5" barrel that I sold a few years ago. It was a great gun and I enjoyed shooting it for a while. I sold it because I hadn't used it for several years, and I didn't see that changing. There was something else that I wanted more and I don't regret the decision.
But, that was me.

I don't know much about the pending issue in Oregon. I really hope that it doesn't pass, or if it does - that it doesn't restrict things as tightly as your post indicates. It sounds like it might be pushing you to making a panic buying decision. In the few minutes that I spent on Google, it doesn't appear that the Oregon gun control measure would become effective until July 1, 2024 (if it passes at all).

This is intended to be helpful. I just don't want you to go out and make a rushed purchase - when you could have waited a bit and made the right purchase for you. (Please confirm the info about the proposed Oregon law - the 7/1/24 info that I posted could be incorrect.) Good luck!

Those are two great choices. Everybody should own a 1911 and a single action revolver. Can't go wrong with either choice.

I would not go with a "cheap" 1911, it will only leave you wanting a nicer one sooner, rather than later. 44 mag blackhawk is sweet too, Underwood makes a +p+ in 44 that comes into middle of the road 454 performance, and the blackhawk can take it.
