Buying a gun today and the shop owner asked if I knew anything about old revolvers. He has a top break Harrington and Richardson Sportsman in 22lr. Looking in the Blue Book you can find something similar in both H&R and Harrington and Richardson entries but the AB serial number is outside of the date ranges listed.
Features I see/saw:
Top break
Safety rim cylinder
Looks like a removable front sight
2 piece wood grips
Finger rest under back of trigger guard
Firing pin in hammer (no transfer bar)

H&R pre Model 99 Sportsman, post WW2, pre 1974ish, just from the pics.

Two points to consider:

H&R had about a gazillion different variations of the double action models, and even the best reference books take pains to stress in their respective forwards that there are significant gaps in the company records.

And

You can mix and match top and bottoms quite easily in multiple variations. For example, both the fixed firing pin hammers and frame mounted pins work on the rebated cylinder.

Hope this helps you out, but I don't think it's really going to. 🙂

I'll give you another weird anomaly, but with my 1932 Sportsman Single Action. First year gun, it has a serrated front strap.

That "option" doesn't appear in any of the references I've read, and nobody I've queried says they've ever seen another. It's factory too as the serial number was moved to accommodate.

So...H&R made a LOT of changes over the 50+ years of production of the various variations.

Good luck in your research.

The 999 is the first handgun I ever shot . Many fond memories. I bought one for my self, but want my great grandfathers- the one I learned on . A **** heel ex uncle stole some guns before GG passed. Never could prove it beyond he came to say his “goodbyes” after years of being out of the family - a wife and child abuser and a poacher - things he’s been convicted of . But after his surprise “visit” the 999, and Ithaca deer slayer and a win 70 308 were gone .
