Grand Power X-Calibur Competition Pistol?

I became intrigued by Pro Shooter/3-gunner Patrick Kelly's review of the Grand Power X-Calibur 9MM. So I ordered one last week and I am anxiously waiting to get my paws on it to try out. They seem really quite interesting.

Some notable points of interest:
* Big Fluted Bull Barrel
* Lightened Slide
* Rotating Locking Barrel System (As opposed to the more typical Browning Locked Breech)
* Totally Ambi Controls out of box (Slide Release, Mag Release, Safety)
* 4 Changeable Back Straps in box
* 3 Recoil Springs in box
* CNC machined Chasis (no MIM parts) with composite frame-grip
* Extended safeties out of box but comes with a pair of low profile safeties.
* SA/DA

Has anyone else here every used a Grand Power X-Calibur? If so can you offer any thoughts?

This is the fascinating barrel.

Thanks for that feedback.. I do figure it will be an odd gun. It seems to be attempting to make a quality competition pistol but at well under $1000 I figure they are selling them at little margin, having to cheap out somewhere or more likely some combination of both. Honestly, the name "Grand Power" struck me like some sort of name that was made up by somebody who doesn't speak english as a first language.

Still though I do trust Patrick Kelley enough to at least take a shot on checking it out. And the rotating barrel is something I want to check out. I hope to be somewhat pleasantly surprised when I finally get to shoot it but I am keeping my expectations fairly low.

I bought one a couple of months ago but unfortunately I have only one short range trip with it so far. My initial impression is that it shoots very well. The trigger pull was 3 lbs. 4 ozs, on my Lyman gauge. I will defer to Brian on the issue of build quality. He seems to have a much better eye for that sort of thing than I do. I also recently picked up a CZ SP-01 Shadow (standard version). The two guns cost about the same and someday when I have plenty of time I am going to take both to the range for a good comparison

Not the Match but a P1. Shoots very well and mine came with 3 front sights, lightened slide and 3 back straps. I like the trigger pull and the grip frame feels more like a Sig to me.
Gun is accurate and felt recoil does seem less than my other 9mm pistols.
Only problem is the fired brass looks like 357 Sig fired in a 40 S&W barrel, case mouth is .380 to 1/3 of the way down the case then .389 and tapers to .390 at the case head.
Sent it to the repair shop to have it checked out, been there 2 weeks with no word on it.
Had to pay to send it in, no RMA and not happy with that.
Also extra mags are kind of hard to find and expensive. At least it came with 2 mags.
The repair shop for Grand Powers is Colorado Guns in Lyon, IN.
I do like the pistol and hopes it gets taken care properly.

I haven't shot one but I've handled it in my local shop. The trigger is light but the second stage has a lot of travel though that travel is smooth and light. The second stage length makes it feel almost like a very short rolling trigger. When locked open the pistol rattles like crazy when moved, I don't think this is relevant to accuracy or function but rather just an artifact of its design. However, it is alarming when you first get handed one with it's slide locked back and you feel it rattle.

Here is a test in German. Use Bing Translate or Google to translate the page

The best 5 shot group at 25 meters was 38mm (1.5 inches) with Remington Golden Saber. Worst was 68mm (2.7 inches) with 154 grain GECO.

I might be tempted if they import their longslide P45L. They've also come up with a striker fired upper much like SIG and their P320.

I received this in but haven't gotten to the range yet.

My first impressions are favorable from merely handling it (field striping, cleaning, lubing, dry firing, etc). As far as if it feels cheap, that isn't how I would describe it especially compared to something like a Glock or most <$1000 polymer pistols. That may be somewhat a product of my lowered expectations though. I paid about 820 for the x-calibur which come with 3 different recoil springs, 4 different backstraps and 2 different sets/sized of Ambi safeties, all in the box from the factory... so I wasn't expecting high end 1911 feel. Due to the unique barrel/lock up it does rattle differently and quite a bit when locked back. The take down isn't as bad as I had feared from watching some folks on youtube. It is different but basically pretty straight forward IMHO.

The factory fresh trigger is unique and I would say it is overall, smooth. In single action it is a nice as most could use. It has a bit more pre-travel than needed but it is pretty darn sweet none the less. Good break and a great reset that is very short, tactile and yet smooth. The double action is well... double action long but it is very very smooth. Surprisingly so I think.

Overall I like it so far. I'll report back more after I have had a chance to ring it out some. :)

Maybe I'll get one at some point.

Put 300 rounds through this yesterday. Recoil impulse is unique and super manageable. Easy to require target quickly. The double action is very very smooth, the single action is great with only slight creep, good break and the reset is terrific. The trigger is not quite as smooth in DA or crisp in SA as my CZ Custom SP01 but at substantially less money.. it is pretty darn sweet. I was going to shoot this in IDPA last night as well to get a good feel for it but I don't have a holster for it yet and it wouldn't fit any of my others.

Over all though I am very pleased with this pistol.

That is true. I did mention that I was going to shoot it in IDPA but that's not exactly correct. The local indoor club match I usually shoot regularly used to be IDPA.. so I still call it that but it's really just a local club match. They basically follow most of the same rules as IDPA.. but not all.

I have now shot the X-Calibur several times in matches... And it really is quite a sweet pistol. Again, the recoil is so super manageable. And at half the price of my CZC SP-01, I am very impressed with it overall.

I would definitely recommend anyone interested in it at all, to give it a try. :thumbsup:

While you likely won't find many stocked at a LGS yet.. The availability is fine IMHO. I ordered 4 extra online (I think from Eagle Imports the importer for GP) but as you might imagine they are a little pricey at $50-ish each. I've seen a few other websites with them as well though. Tombstone tactical and others.

They seem like quality magazines I believe made by Mec-Gar like CZ.
