I was just cruising gun broker and saw the G17 classic Gen1 reproduction. Is the 17 classic and the P80 the same exact gun except for the P80 rollmark? The P80 is twice the price of the 17 Gen1 classic and I'm just curious as to if there any differences between the two? Either way I may get one of these.

Thanks for the info yeah I owned a gen 2 17 20 years ago. I had seen a G1 G17 at a local gun shop and foolishly passed on it. Which led me to the gen 2 G17 I bought way back then. I wish I had that gen 1 G17 now given their current asking prices.

I think at tax time I'll pick up a G17 for the nostalgia of it all. It'll be a shooter HD and maybe CCW gun even. But maybe not as I plan to pick up another Glock still a Gen 4 31 or 32 maybe Gen 5 G23 or a GEL or G4 G23C. Ahh oh well decisions decisions hey?

I don't see any difference between the P80 and Gen 1 G17 recreation except for the roll mark. I bought my P80 when they were $650 at my local Cabelas and I am glad I got it when I did. It is substantially the same as my early Gen1 G17 with just a few subtle differences. Having only seen pics of the Gen1 repops I would be interested in handling one to do a A/B comparison between it and the P80, but to me they look exactly the same, down to the tupperware box being the same recycled Gen3 box. I don't feel any overriding urge to actually buy one as I already have a fairly early Gen1 G17, as well as a Gen2 17L.

I bought one as a collectors piece when they were introduced.

Unfortunately the name creates a lot of confusion, and I blame this for the lack of dollar value appreciation.

Most people do not know what they are and rightly confuse these with the currently trendy DIY build your own type projects: Polymer80, or P80 .

Here is a good history of the Glock development, and the reason Glock 17 uses 17 (17th patent - not the round count).

Hey all thanks for the replies on this as well as the information. Some of which I did not know.
I'd like to get one of the G17 reissues soon. I think the G17 is really cool,as I owned a gen2 model about 20 years ago.

I had seen an early gen1 G17 in a local shop back then but foolishly passed on it. That's how ended up with Gen2 one. I had traded that for something else way back when and don't remember what. Anyways I've always liked the Gen 1 guns and that is the first Glock that started it all which is really cool it's iconic in the gun world. It's a lot like how back when the first iphone came out it changed cell phones forever. Much like the Glock 17 did with how we thought about handguns.

I have both. The only differences I've seen are 17 vs P80 markings. If I remember correctly the Gen 1 17 has a serial number that starts with GEN1 and the P80 is a random block of numbers. I'm about 95% sure on the serial numbers.

Also, pretty sure the 17 presentation box has a little cloth tab to make it easier to open. That cloth tab isn't present on my P80 presentation box.

I haven't detailed stripped them for a side to side comparison. But pretty sure from the literature that they are the same.

I just got a 17 classic, prices are now down to earth ($499 off grab a gun). Grip frame styles are all about individual preference but I prefer the G1 shape and texture over all subsequent “improvements”. G5 would be my second choice, but I prefer the G3 RSA and FPS systems. So for me the G17 classic is just what I want in a daily driver..
