You can go into any situation with any gun. But the one that will get you home is a Glock. My recommendation is a G26 so it can be concealed but shoot like a bigger gun.

“You can drive into the jungle in a Land Rover, but to get out of the jungle, drive a Toyota…”.

I would pick a Glock 42/43 with night sights and a TLR 6 light/laser, with 2 extra magazines. Light weight, compact, adaptable, and durable.

Bring more magazines if you feel the need for more ammo.

I would be fine, I think, with carrying my Glock 19X with it's flush fit 17 round mag and at least the 2 extra 19 round mags that came with it. However, I have now purchased 5 more 17 round mags and at least 2 will be stationed in my truck. If it is SHTF, I do not plan on taking prisoners. As a soon to be 69 year old male, I will not be able to outrun anyone, nor carry a 40 lb backpack. I really hope to never be in that type of situation, but the world is going to hell in a handbasket at a dizzying pace!

Good topic though and good responses from all. Much to think about.

Damn after reading your post and what I have in my trunk in comparison I'm a total victim. Maybe I should at least thrown in one of those Rambo survival knives the one with a compass on top and hidden compartment in the handle.

I don't think I'd need anything big (Rifle, SubGun, etc) because in most situations I'd be up against 99.9% totally unprepared populace. No hordes of mindless Zombies or Hard Core Insurgents, just your average frightened civilians to deal with.

I may need to hoof it and extra weight isn't a good thing either so nothing big gun or caliber wise, thought is your engagement zone is not big (no need to drawn attention, only deal with immediate and eminent threats)

With that said a Glock 19x with light and optic, 2 extra mags and given I'm now sporting more shtf stuff in my trunk an extra box of ammo all in that bug out backpack filled with the essentials sporting an easy access area for that 19x. This way I can either get to the 19x or grab the whole bag and hoof it.

Still want one of those knives now....

I was in a somewhat similar situation.

My thoughts were a P80 build. Completely off paper and if the balloon went up and anything unfortunate happened I would disassemble and have a couple boating accidents afterward. I have zero interest in any legal entanglement after civil society is restored. Jurist can have short memories once the lights come back on and there are bread and circuses again.

Bruen solved my main problem so it never came into being. A P80 would have some serious plausible deniability. I actually dont own anything in 9mm.

Before I retired I secured a footlocker in the back of my SUV and used to keep an M4gery with mag, a 2 quart canteen, an LBE (with another 2 1 qt canteens, first aid pouch, mag pouches with 6 more mags, kabar, holster for my sidearm that I EDCed, and flashlight) looked at it as a "get home package". I also had a case of water and a case of MREs for emergencies.

The only time I had to take the rifle out was when I was the security for our E911 Center, (that I ran), after Hurricane Katrina to free up officers to work the city and county. I put it in my office, but given that we were on generator and had a magnetic lock on the doors, I never expected to have to use it. I did clear a building a few blocks away with my sidearm along with an officer that was assigned to the Center when we thought it was being looted. After that I sent her back to the PD and provided security for dispatch since I was living out of my office during the recovery.

Scenario:
1) I live in State A, and work in State B 2-3 days a week

2) I have a carry permit for my State (A) but not State B. Out of state permits for State B are hard to get.

3) The office is on the west side of Portland. Lots of homeless, tents and such, but not rioters.

4) Work does not allow me to carry a gun, but I keep a firearm (unloaded) plus ammo in a locked case in my locked trunk. They probably have a rule against that also since I park "on-site", but "what they don't know. . ."

The purpose of that gun is a “get home gun” in the event of earthquakes, volcanic eruption (seriously), power failures, zombies, aliens, ANTIFA/BLM civil disturbances and such and I have to walk home or drive home in a hostile situation.

It is not for general CCW.
It is a Get Home Gun. .

Also, I cannot CCW for part of the trip, then pull over and unload the gun and lock it in the trunk as OR and WA are separated by the Columbia river and there are only two major bridges across the river. It would take me 10-15 extra minutes to exit I-5, do the gun stuff and get back on. I cannot simply remove the magazine as Oregon considers a firearm plus a loaded magazine = loaded gun, even if the mag is NOT in the gun.

I also keep emergency supplies in my trunk. A backpack filled with basics such as food, water, ponchos, flashlight, radio, matches, med kit, batteries, map, compass, rope, survival tent, survival bivvy & blankets, life straws, para-cord, ground cover and so on. I could grab that bag and have most of the essentials I need.

I also keep a box with extra supplies that are more event or season specific like spray on water proofing, a tarp, rope, car stuff, cooking supplies, extra clothes and such.

Back to the gun issue:
What would you pick for this task?
  • Centerfire? - Can’t carry as much ammo. (75 rnds or so)
  • Rimfire - Could carry 200 rounds which would be nice (i.e. premium CC ammo)
  • Revolver?
  • Pistol?
  • Rifle? Not concealable, More intimidating?
  • Breakdown 22LR?
  • Other?
Number 1 would be a PSA carbine - something super cheap. I think you can pick one up sub $500.

Number 2 would be a G26.

Number 3 is a HK USP 45.
