Galil Ace

Got to finally handle a Galil Ace today and was VERY impressed. I don’t think I’ve ever handled a rifle whose action was so smooth. The gun felt remarkably tight and well machined. I have some pretty nice ARs and AKs but this was just on another level. Didn’t get to shoot it unfortunately but that’s in the cards in the near future.

Anyone have these in any of the calibers they are offered in? Post up your experience with them, the good and bad. I’m particularly interested in the 308. I think this could be a SCAR or AR10 killer. Thanks

They are pretty nice, at least the one I shot was. Dented the everliving heck out of the brass though, which eliminated it from this reloaders consideration.

My local indoor range has a .308 pistol with brace and shorty barrel. My poor ears hurt just seeing it on their wall.

I have the 7.62x39 pistol with brace. It came overgassed, and I wanted to suppress it so I put the KNS adjustable piston on. Dialed all the way down it works well with the suppressor. Moved the suppresor back to a 300BLK and adjusted the gas piston to match up with military type loads and it drops the brass 2 feet away in a neat pile. Super solid gun, but spendy. Talked to IWI and they clued me into the KNS piston, said there was no other way to get it to work suppressed. Also, ACE has a gasket sealing the cover at back, so no gas blowback in face.

Speaking of Galils, I saw Bud's posted on Facebook that they had this in today. If I was in the Galil market: "Used Galil in 5.56 - Original IMI Pre-Ban!"

Man, that's gorgeous. I've been pondering one of those ATI rebuilds on my "some day soon" list

Wow, I would never have imagined that the SCAR had so many problems. That failure rate they describe seems unacceptable for a combat weapon. I’m wondering if the SCAR 16 has the same issues.

In any case, I ended up with the Galil 308 rifle and couldn’t be more pleased. Very accurate from my limited testing, soft recoil, off the chart quality. Everything is solid, tight and smooth. I replaced those goofy looking bulbous rail covers with ERGO ladder-type covers which slimmed the handguard down significantly. It’s GTG right out of the box, one of the few weapons that I haven’t felt the need to make any modification to. Just added an ACOG and a Grip Pod which I already had and added a Blue Force AK sling and that’s all I’ll be doing to it.

I'm old fashioned and don't care for the one piece polymer magwell/trigger guard-housing/pistol grip of the new IWI Galil Ace rifles or pistols, or those cheesy round-ish cheese grater picatinny rail covers...I'd much rather have either the 2x4 wood or the black polymer original type Galil handguard.

Since I'm not into toting around rifles anymore, if I had to (LOL) have a Galil type firearm I think I'd have a pistol built using an original Galil Micro parts kit on one of the new Galil billet receivers, with a provision to add a brace, and also a stock at a later date should I decide to SBR it one day...

If anybody decides that want that one, it's at the real Bud's store, not the online store. I have no idea whether you can call them up and mail order it.

Was tempted several years ago, had a range buddy with one in 7.62x39 for sale, ended up buying a VEPR .308 from him instead.

It was a hard choice, both were nice, but opted for the larger caliber, as I already had two semiauto 7.62x39's. I didn't have a .308 semi auto, so went that route, already had a VEPR in 7.62x54R and knew they were great rifles.

The one that got away was a Valmet, that was offered to me for 400. I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough, unfortunately the guy looked them up and then wanted 1600 for it, out of my price range but totally worth it.

If I didn't drink whiskey already, that would have driven me to it.

You have no idea.

Here was that grail item, that '65 Corvette that was garage kept, that the old widow woman wanted 500 for, to get it out of her garage.

Short story, not a gun guy, his brother had died, and he had to travel 3 states away, load up his junk, and haul it home. He had a list of stuff for sale stuck on a bulletin board at work, as soon as I saw it went and hunted him down.

He immediately got suspicious, as I offered him 200 cash as earnest money, as that was all I had on me at the time, and told him I would give him the rest that night, when we went off shift, and I could get to the bank.

He refused it, went home, got online, and did his research.

FWIW, did show me a pic of it, and it was pretty rusty, had not been cared for, stuck in a closet for years. I don't know what he got for it, but would not come off the 1600 price one iota.

Fortunate enough to have a pre-ban 332 7.62, bit very underwhelmed when I held the 7.62 ACE. If I didn’t have a pre-ban, I’d still be less than enthused by the ACE rifles.

Was going to make a post, till I saw this thread. I finally got me a Galil Ace, but instead of 5.56, I decided to get it in 7.62x39 since I now have a piston upper Franken AR. (M&P 15 lower w/ACE stock, unknown carbine upper with an old CMMG piston kit installed with a Midwest Industries quad rail)

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, I thought I'd give everyone a head's up and let you know that IWI made some changes to the 7.62x39 SAR rifle version. (Don't know about the other versions)

Number one, IWI deleted the button/hole on the foregrip that would allow you to activate a pressure switch underneath if you wanted to run a pressure switch to either side of the foregrip.

This was a baffling choice since underneath the rail covers they still have the cutouts for the pressure switch. It also kinda irked me because I had considered keeping the foregrip if I decided to make use of it and run a pressure switch under the guard. I will be contacting IWI tomorrow to see if I can get an older set of the foregrips. I will let you know what they say.

The second thing I noticed, was that on the top rail, they deleted the cutouts, so the rail sections are now solid. Not sure why they did that, unless they decided that they weren't really needed.

One other thing to note is that instead of being stamped

IWI US, Inc
Harrisburg, PA

the rifle is now stamped

IWI US
MIDDLETOWN, PA

Here are the pictures of the aforementioned first two changes :

How is the rifle? have you fired it yet? I’m debating on this or an ZPAP M70 since I don’t have anything chambered in 762x39 yet

I love the Galil Ace and am about to take possession of my second one in the next few days. But it’s hard to argue with what you are saying. The prices, especially now on Gunbroker (one of the only sources for an Ace these days) is eye popping. $3k+ for the 7.62x39 and 5.45 models is especially egregious. Of course, anything gun related right now is laughably high (I am constantly rolling my eyes these days at what people are shamelessly asking).

I paid under $1800 for each of my Galil Aces brand new (7.62 Nato and 5.56 versions) and for what you are getting, I’m happy with my purchases. Probably should be priced at $1500 but ok, we are living in weird times. No WAY I’m paying over $3k for one of these though.

I know the Israelis are proud of their guns, but that's a $1000 gun at a $1600 price.

Considering what that amount of coin will get you in the AR world, the new Galil's are an automatic no-go for me simply due to that price.
