Toocool45 is correct. Aside from the "Austria"-marked OEM 15-round G19.4 magazines, OEM 15-round G19.4 & G19.5 magazines both use the same "1594"-marked Bodies, #6 Followers (Black #6 for Gen 4, Orange #6 for Gen 5), and nearly-identical Inserts. I say "nearly identical" because if you look at the Inserts side-by-side the finish is very slightly different but they appear to be dimensionally equivalent. The Springs are 10-Coil in both the G19.4 & G19.5 magazines. Full Disclosure: I didn't measure the dimensions of the Inserts or the or the Spring Weight of the springs. Barring any differences in those, the Floorplates appear to be the only true difference between the OEM 15-round G19.4 & G19.5 magazines.

#6 follower is pretty old. New double stack 9mm mags have been using #7 since around 2019.

I own and prefer my Gen 4 G19 (I am a smaller grip and finger groove person). But I have a bunch of mags, including some Gen 5 mags.

What should I use as my primary self defense magazines with it? Basically, Gen 4 magazines because they were engineered for the Gen 4 pistol or Gen 5 mags because they work and have the latest technology? Thoughts? Thanks. Or surprise me with recommending any other magazine generations cuz I probably have em all.
Gen 4 and 5 19 magazines are the same with the exception of the base pad. And the orange or black follower. If i was buying new id spring for the orange follower gen 5 mags. I like the idea of seeing the orange follower. But id switch the base plates on the gen 5 mag.

I guess the the Gen4 & Gen5 mags I've seen are older then...

My two cents. Range Magazines I would not care as long as they function.
Carry Magazines, I really like the Orange Follower. If you need to see how many rounds you have left, the Orange Follower shows up through the witness holes, where Black Followers do not. The Orange Follower Gen 5's are an improvement for a combat magazine.

I had a G19.2 and 6 mags, that worked perfectly with any ammo I tried.
I sold the 19.2 and 2 mags to another officer, kept the other 4 G19.2 mags to use in the G19.3 that I had just bought.

My new G19.3 was perfect with its new mags, but with the 19.2 mags it would nose-dive a JHP into the feed ramp about once every 30 rds. Since I was shooting departmental ammo, I did a lot of testing and discovered that the 19.2 mags simply were not reliable in the 19.3
I gave the remaining 19.2 mags to the other officer and he never had any problems in that gun.
My new 19.3 was also fully reliable with its 19.3 mags.

Different generations of mag will usually work in different generations of gun, but not always.
"Trust, but verify."

Oh, geez. Use the mags that work. Regardless of their generation.
