To make a really short story long, I got a call from a friend at my preferred LGS today stating that the owner had some old display models and what not that they would be selling with steep discounts...so I rolled by. Not too much interested me, except one Glock 19 Gen 3 hiding in the corner of the case. Suffice it to say, for no other reason than the cost, and the decent condition of the piece (for a display model that had been out a LONG time), I grabbed it.

So what I have is a Glock 19 Gen 3, OE Night sights (pretty faded at this point but I will replace them anyways), 2 mags in the box. Looks like based on serial # research it was manufactured in 2004. The box the shop gave me is not the original, but is in the same serial # range...and that validates the 2004 date as well (box still has the test shells, etc, just looks like at some point along the way a couple of boxes got mixed up). From a condition standpoint, no dings on the finish at all (was surprised), everything looks perfect...so the question is, other than shoot it....what should I do to this thing? I am only $300 into it!

To answer your question, shoot it! :)

Killer deal on one of Glock's best ever produced.

Lol fair point and sarcasm noted (and appreciated)....but NIB with perfect frying pan finish isn't bad...lots of folks like that coating.

Any way about it, it will make for a nice CCW piece or range toy. Maybe I'll mod it a bit...Gen 3 seems to have the widest variety of aftermarket parts/support.

For sure...not my first 19, nor will it be my last. I already have a sock drawer full of 19 holsters (they go so nicely with my 19x as well) so it seemed like a "why not" kind of situation.

Sadly, I was in said shop yesterday as well picking up a Dan Wesson I ordered....expensive weekend overall!

I hate to say it, but I think you bought a better Glock than can be had for any price these days. I 100% know the frying pan finish is superior. Non-MIM extractor is probably better. And by far most importantly of all, your 2004 era G19 undoubtedly has real Tennifer that’s impervious to rust. I hope Glock is back to doing the same quality of nitriding, had two of three 2011-2012 era pistols that got rust as easily as a blued gun. I’d gladly pay $600 for a NIB 2004 vintage G17.

Hahaha I gather! I would love to claim I had an idea as to what I was doing, but luck probably sums it up! To me the price was right, and having good memories of the finish in Glocks past, I figured why not. The fact that I dumbed my way into a gem...well...I’ll take it!

Took the aforementioned lady out for a test-fire last evening finally. I replaced the sights with new nights (the 2004 OE sights were dim, all but dark completely) and then had other various work things to accomplish.

It ran like a Glock 19! I had one issue with some sparks from the ejection port in the 50 rounds I shot (didn't have a ton of time, but wanted to start running it). I was shooting Blazer Brass (decent range ammo) 115gr...it was only one shot so a trend this does not yet make, but it did fly towards my face, so it got my attention. Given the age, it could be weak recoil spring (though it feels normal in racking and otherwise). If it becomes a pattern, the resolution is all of a $5 issue so I am not concerned.

Otherwise...shot well, accurate as expected...cleaned up nicely!

I would say that building a relationship with a locally owned and operated shop is essential. Not necessarily in just spending $, but spending some time talking to the employees, perhaps taking a class from them if they are offered, etc. Let them get to know you...and most importantly, what you like/look for.

The reason is that unlike big-box stores, these little shops aren't shipping lagging inventory across the country, to and from warehouses, or other stores. They have what they have....and every so often...something gets lost in the back of the safe and during some spring cleaning....they re-appear!

With a solid relationship with the shop....perhaps your phone too will ring...and an opportunity to get a great deal will manifest itself!

The Gen 3 Glock 19 is the best Glock ever made in my opinion. Especially with the older frying pan finish. You did well. All that I do is replace the sights and sometimes at an extended slide release but definitely replace the sights with a good set of Ameriglos. I like the CAP sights for social work.

I threw a set of Night Fision sights on it. They are a smaller brand, but have had them on the 43 for a year and the are not only clear/bright, but a very good value as well. Here's a link to them...

I have a 2004 19 Gen 3 that I carry regularly. It came with the 15 round mags from the assault weapons ban era that are marked for law enforcement only. I shoot and carry that gun regularly. It is one of my favorites.
