$40-$60 for a private transfer in most shops around here but if you buy a gun most places it is $5 for the check.......

I charge:
$15 per long gun.
$20 per used handgun
New handguns are an additional $15 each because I have to make a 3 hour round trip to provide a casing to NYSP. If the casing comes with the pistol, which some still do not, I have to mail it certified mail to CoBis.
I'm required to provide a lock with each gun, and NYs lock law is written in such a way that many of the cheaper locks that used to meet laxer gun lock laws wont pass muster here. I'm not going to eat the cost of that lock.

Its still mainly a hobby for me, and I charge what I see are minimal fees to recoup my costs. There are no brick and mortar gun stores in my area anymore, and very few of us tabletop dealers left to boot. I would like to have been able to open a store when I retired from my other jobs, but now I'm of the mind that I'll be leaving NY when that happens.

As for the OPs claim that he does all the work, I've had plenty of customers over the years who wanted a particular gun, didn't have a source in mind, and had me calling all over the country looking for the cheapest possible distributor for their desired product, to the point that the customer would quibble over an extra $5 in shipping cost. So please, son't tell me that you do all the work and the FFL is doing nothing.
well said !!
most guys that run there mouth have no idea what it takes to run a gun shop and thinks everything should be done at cost.
they think people dont need to get paid there is insurance, light bills phone bills heat and everything.
where i work it takes about $5000 a month to open up everyday.
i can see giveing your core group of customers a break but guys that shop around to save $5 and never spend a dime in the store. i charge them every cent i can..........

Being in and coming from a long line of business owners, I can appreciate the fixed and recurring costs of running a business, but don't try to tell me that 5 minutes of your time TO CALL IN THE BRIEF INFO is worth more than $20. Just don't.

It costs me a beer the next time I'm out to dinner/lunch/whatever with my FFL.

I know 4 guys that have FFL's. One charges me $15 the other 3 do it for their cost.

The way I read the OP was that if he bought a gun from somebody and need a transfer, he was doing the work as the FFL only needed to store the papers.

I did not see that he had a FFL looking for anything.
My point that I was trying to make was that he was saying FFLs don't do anything BUT store the paperwork. I was trying to show that we are actually doing more...at least I do.

Yea alot of my local shops have the same attitiude, which is why I no longer give them a freakin dime of my money! Yea I'll pay 80-100 more for a firearm just so I can help you stay in business, Please.

Hopefully this is in the right place. What is the standard transfer fee in your area? Most guys here are in the $50 range, even a report of $100. That seems a little steep to me. I had one guy tell me if he did 1000 a year at $50 he would break even. I realize they pay for the license and space for the store but $50k a year and break even, Please. I am the one doing all the work filling out the form, all they have to do is file it. Most now have a computer that I type in all the info. I also realize they lose on the sale but most are overpriced in the first place. What gives?
I spoke with the owner of a local gun shop this past week about his policy on transfer/FFL fees. He said he charges $25/transaction. I think that's fair. Sincerely. Brucev.

You don't happen to be in Syracuse? Not many shops around here.
From what I can find the transfer fees range from $50-100. I tried to sell a handgun to a fellow out of state and the shop wanted to charge me $50 for overnight shipping and $50 for paperwork. I passed.

I imagine it's hard to find a shop in that liberal haven. My buddy went to college there and is still there. He definitely became a hipster.

Pretty much; a buyer has to go through a tabletop or take a long trip, if someone wants to buy something other than the meager offerings you find at places like Dicks Sporting Goods.

Dick's SG, what a joke. Are they still trying to sell WWB 9mm Value Packs for $38.99 there? I just saw that in my Dick's and Sports Authority IIRC.

I'm jealous of some of you. My best local shop is $35 or 10% whichever is greater. It never gets any cheaper even if all thats needed is the transfer for something out of state. The owner knows me and knows I have spent $10k+ in his store over the years... It would be nice to get a break every now and then.

Around here its usually 20-25. I have never had anyone complain, although I don't think I have ever had something shipped to an FFL that they actually had on thier shelves either. I tend to deal with the guys at the small pawn shops. A few of them around here are real gun lovers, so it is fun to stop by and chat with them anyway.
