I can see the headline...

"Florida Man blows off hand with pellet gun"

When asked what he was shooting, Jake reported that it was factory ammo from Wal-Mart. Last year, Jake had a 10mm Socket blow up his Glock as well.
Ha Ha! Pretty sure "CAcop" is not a Florida man though! (But residents do escape CA on retirement!)

They are pretty smart though about it though.

Older generations, perhaps, if there are any. With the drought, we've had a dozen generations of them never having seen more than a sprinkle at a time. The "bomb cyclone" (their term, not mine) of Dec/Jan wiped out about 1/2 of the population. Lazy house builders, knowing no better. Or, the ground was so saturated there was no good design. This happens about every decade, to a point my septic system stops working, with the water table raising to inches. Also, a large number of them denned in my pond levee. Once the water level raises above their upper chambers, they're flooded with no logical (to a squirrel) escape. A beaver would know what to do, and probably love it, but not all rodents are the same. I've also flushed them out with a water hose so, not so smart, all of them anyway.

I remember way back when they would put a drop of starter fluid or ether at the base of the pellet. You would see a flash out of the barrel as the pellet exited. Hard on the seals though.
